Joint pain is one of the main causes of disability in the U.S and beyond. It is very common to individuals over the age of 45 and even strikes adults in their 20's and 30's. The number of people suffering from joint pain gets larger each year.

Joint pain is generally an unexplained soreness in the joints and muscles not necessarily related to any type of injury. It is usually worst at night, causing discomfort and lack of sleep. This condition is also known as arthritis or arthralgia and can last for weeks, months and even years.

What happens in joint pain is that the cartilage between the bones gradually wears away. This could be due to aging or some type of injury that affects the synovial fluid in the joint.

As a result of this taking place, the bones move closer together and start grinding against each other. This causes swelling and stiffness and makes movement of the affected joint painful.

Arthritis and joint pain is very common among retired and active athletes. These include runners, basketball players, football players and hockey players. Their joints take a pounding, (which is why you see their knees wrapped up in ace bandages) and this sets the stage for arthritis.

Joint pain or arthritis is also a major cause of people losing their jobs. This is due to the fact that a large number of jobs require physical activity that involves bending, lifting and climbing stairs.

Treatments for joint pain vary depending on the severity and location. The most common way to treat patients is through physical therapy. The patient is instructed by the therapist to perform various exercises designed to strengthen the joint. Theses exercises include simple walking and light resistance training.

Another method of treatment is medications like cortisone shots and cox-2 inhibitors. These are designed to reduce pain and swelling and to help the patient to cope with their joint problem. A last resort is surgery after which recovery time is much longer.

However, these medications don't get to the root of their problem. They just mask the symptoms until they wear off and you have to take them again. It's a repetitive process and can become addictive.

Fortunately, there are other alternatives to these medications and they are completely natural and non-addictive. One natural product that works well for joint pain is msm (short for methylsulfonylmethane). Msm is a dietary sulfur that has been proven to be beneficial in rebuilding and healing joint cartilage.

The reason for this is that cartilage consists of sulfur. When the body is saturated with enough msm it quickly addresses the areas of the body where most needed.

Other natural products beneficial to joint pain,(especially when used together with msm) are glucosamine, chondroitin and large dosages of vitamin c.

If you are a victim of joint pain or arthritis, then it might be worth looking into some of these other options. They just may be what's needed to restore joint health and flexibility.
