The wedding cake can be a very important part of the wedding for most couples (or should I say brides?) Among all the decisions that will have to be made, this is one you can decide on early to get it out of the way and thus have one less thing to worry about. Finding or creating unusual wedding cake designs can be fun to do and does not have to be a headache.

If you decide to go with a traditional wedding cake you should be able to find something easily enough. I would suggest you start looking through bridal magazines as soon as the date is set. Tear out any pictures of cakes you like and put them all in a file. You can then pick and choose or mix and match. Take certain elements from one cake and add it to another. Or use one decorating theme with another shape cake. Use different flowers, fruit and decorations until you find the perfect fit for your unusual wedding cake design.

If however you would like to have something different, something unique, something you, you will have to take the abovementioned steps a bit further. I have seen so many unusual wedding cake designs and loved the originality. Once you have all the elements you would like to have in your cake design, start selecting the ones you like best and draw the cake on a sheet of paper and no, you do not have to be an artist to be able to do this. It will just give you an idea of what you want.

The next step will be to discuss your ideas with the person who will be making your wedding cake or a cake designer if you can afford one. Or maybe you would like to make your own wedding cake. My daughter knew exactly what she wanted and decided to make the seven layer very unusual, beautiful wedding cake herself. She selected four different flavors for the layers that consisted of cheesecake, a decadent chocolate mousse, a key lime pie and a lemon meringue pie. We then invited the parents of the groom and some friends one evening to help taste and decide which ones will be used.

I had her practice a few times before the wedding to make sure she was comfortable enough with baking the cakes and assembling the whole tower. It turned into one of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen and not because my daughter made it, it truly was spectacular and not at all costly! I hope these suggestions will help you to create unusual cake designs yourself. Not only can you save a lot of money but you can also have the satisfaction of doing it yourself and having something truly unique.
