Most swimming pool chemicals are hazardous. As such it is very important that they are treated with care and with sensible precautions. Read our quick guide and always follow any Health and Safety information provided by the supplier.

THE DO'S

Always wear a good pair of chemical-proof rubber gloves when handling any chemicals. Always wear splash proof goggles when handling exposed chemicals. Always wear a good quality dust mask when handling powdered chemicals. Always wear the correct respirator if handling chemicals that may fume or gas. Always ensure people and pets are well away from you when you are handling or dosing chemicals. Always wash your hands after handling chemicals or chemical containers. Allow at least 15 minutes for the chemicals to disperse before allowing anyone into the water. Always stand upwind if you have to throw chlorine granules directly into the pool. Always store pool chemicals in a secure and safe place, and out of the reach of children. Always keep pool chemicals in a separate place to any other chemicals Always store acids and chlorines separately, so that there is no chance of them accidently coming into contact with each other. Always store pool chemicals in their original containers and in a cool, dark, dry place.

THE DO NOT'S

Allow pool chemicals to come into contact with your skin. Never smoke, eat, or drink when handling or dosing chemicals. Do not add chemicals to a pool whilst anyone is in the water. Never allow any type of chlorine to come into contact with any acid. Chlorine in contact with any acid will produce poisonous chlorine gas. Never allow two different types of chlorine to come into contact when in concentrated form. This may result in toxic fumes, fire or explosion. Never add water to chemicals. Always add the chemical to as large a quantity of water as possible. Water added to concentrated chemicals can produce violent reactions. Never throw dry acid (pH-) granules straight into the pool. It dissolves slowly and could destroy grout and possibly damage the liner. Mix Dry Acid thoroughly with water in a plastic bucket until the solution is completely clear, then pour carefully around the pool. Never dose acid by putting it in the skimmer. It could damage the pool heater and any other metal items that it contacts with. Never throw chlorine granules directly in to the pool. Granules dissolve slowly and whilst in concentrated form can bleach the colour from paint and liners.
