After all the expense and disruption of installing a swimming pool the last thing you want is a cloudy unattractive pool that no-one wants to use. Often it can be very difficult and time consuming to get it clear.
Follow our 10 point plan to avoid this happening.
1. Use an Algaecide as per the manufacturers directions. Use either a long life Algaecide which is usually applied every six months, or a weekly one, which is cheaper but more time consuming. Use of these chemicals will help inhibit the algae growth, but not remove it.
2. Inefficient filtration. It is possible that your filter and or pump are too small for your size pool. Seek advice from a professional and up-grade your equipment as required.
3. Constant backwashing. To a certain extent a filter requires some dirt to remain in the filter. If the sand is too loose, debris can possibly be sent straight through the filter and back in to the water.
4. Heavy use. Too many swimmers and not enough sanitizer to match. Shock dose the pool after it has been exceptionally well used.
5. Water too warm. Warm water promotes algae growth and lowers sanitizer levels.
6. Garden chemicals getting into your swimming pool water.
7. Ensure that pH levels are correct. As high pH levels can cause cloudiness, it should be between 7.2 and 7.6 (ideally 7.4).
8. High Calcium Hardness. Calcium hardness levels should be between 250 and 600 ppm (ideally 250 ppm).
9. Dirty toys & floats will put a strain on the sanitizer.Make sure that anything brought in to the pool is regularly cleaned.
10. Make sure that your regular cleaning routine is kept up. Ensure that the pool is regularly brushed and vacuumed.
If the worst happens and you find your wateris still cloudy, then the use of a flocculant may well help. Flocculants work by coagulating together all the very small particles that are in your water. Once bound together these then become heavy and sink to the floor, forming a thin layer that can be vacuumed away. It is best to apply this flocculant at the end of the day, circulate for a few hours and then let the water settle overnight In the morning all of the larger particles should be sitting nicely on the floor, ready to be hoovered away.
