Most people will have some other business training or experience prior to joining an MLM business. They may have worked for years in another industry, and then one day they were downsized and looked around for a new opportunity and decided to try MLM. There are many positive aspects that lure people to the network marketing industry, and many feel they have just what it takes to succeed. But because MLMs are different than traditional businesses they will need to adjust their skills if they hope to stand out and make a living.

Old Skills

Traditional businesses have different requirements than MLMs and many new direct sale recruits need to learn to refocus their efforts. For example, a recruit may have worked for a large corporation where she handled data. Her job was to gather data, sort through it and file it for future use. She probably spent most of her day entering data in the computer, compiling and categorizing the information, and producing monthly reports for the department heads. The business needed this work done and she did a great job.

Refocus Efforts

However, this skill is not completely transferable or needed in a MLM. Certainly organization and attention to detail are always important. But, MLM direct sale recruits need to get out and sell. Sometimes recruits are so afraid of selling that they create tasks in their MLMs that are unnecessary, including creating vast computer databases, to avoid the real work of MLMs which is selling and recruiting others to sell. They need to refocus their efforts and adjust their skills to what is needed in MLM.

Adjust Skills

Some previous business skills would seem to be perfect for MLM and the person might think they could join and experience success right away. As MLMs are all about sales, it would seem to mean that a successful salesperson in another industry could easily sell in MLM. But again, MLMs are different than other businesses and what works in one may not work in the other. For example, in some industries salespeople are more aggressive and they use strong tactics to close the sale. Aggressive sales techniques just won't work in MLMs. MLMs deal with people, regular everyday people who want to be treated fairly and honestly. If a sponsor tried to use aggressive or intimidating tactics on a prospect they may recruit them today, but there is a good chance the recruit will drop out in a few days.

New Work Habits

People who experienced success in previous jobs will learn that they will need to evolve and develop to succeed in a MLM. They need to realize what tasks contribute to MLM success, and what task are time wasters and a way to avoid the real MLM work. If they have previous sales success, they will have to accept that they will probably have to adjust their sales skills to sell and succeed in MLM. They do not have to forget or ignore their previous experiences and abilities. They just need to adjust their skills and attitudes so they can experience new success in the MLM industry.
