In my position of leader and visionary for my businesses it is vitally important that I learn new things. I spend much time reading, listening to cd's and dvd's , and talking to people on the phone. Coming up with new ideas and better ways to do things is important and challenging but sometimes the ideas just don't come. I find myself struggling to be creative and come up with the solutions that I'm looking for.
It's at that time that I stop and walk away from my work to do something that is fun for me and not related to work. Often times these breaks for me involve time with my family, exercise, walks, or fishing.
These relaxing activities often times help me come up with solutions to the challenges even without thinking about them.
There is one other thing that often times gives me the answers that I'm looking for.
Going Back To Successful Experiences Of My Past
I go back to the things that I've done particularly well and bring back the feelings and emotions that those experiences gave me. I then use that same feeling and emotion to solve my challenge of the present. It's called going to the theater of your mind. Let me give you an example.
In 1989 I was competing in Black Belt sparring at the Diamond Nationals. I was fighting in the middleweight division which happened to have some of the most talented fighters in the country. Everything was working for me that day and I was defeating my competitors with surprising ease. I knew that this would change because when I was finished competing with the non seated competitors then I would have to face the guys who were rated. Eventually I would compete with the #1 and #2 ranked fighters in the country. I specifically remember some of the talk that was going on before I competed against the #1 guy. Most specifically it was, "no one has beaten this guy this year." Oh well, I thought. All good things must come to an end. I defeated the #1 guy and then went on to defeat the #2 guy and eventually win the national championship at that level. What a great day! It was very exciting for my wife, our students, and myself.
This is an experience that I can visit anytime in my mind to bring back the excitement, emotion and feelings of success that I can use to allow me to have success in other things.
What are your past successes? Visit them often and you will be surprised at how they can influence your success in the future.
