I was working with my group of middle school and high school students. When I first started the class I pulled the 2 young men who are middle schoolers off to the side and explained to them what an important step they were taking to be successful in high school sports.

One of the young guys is a cross country runner and the other is a basketball player. I told them that it was important to work with older kids who are more skilled and who are also more mature. By being around older kids they will want to raise their expectations and also develop the work habits and drive of the older ones.

I told them that it's important to have the right mind set when it comes to your workout. Most importantly, do every workout with a purpose in mind. How are you going to get better today? I suggested to them that you should never do a workout without a specific goal in mind for the day. After a while they will find that they will develop a momentum and that momentum will carry them to bigger and better things.

I also mentioned to them the importance of constantly being aware of their breathing and their center. Focusing on stretching and tightening their mid section during exercise will make them consistently more aware of the need to tighten and strengthen their stomachs.

Are these things that you do during your workouts? Is your workout more than simply sweating and taking some time out of your day. How aware are you of your body and your breathing and is your focus such that you can center in on your whole body and know what it is doing and how it is functioning? These are all important things for you to consider to take your workout to the next level.

Getting back to the two young guys that I have in my class. They seem to have a maturity and courage beyond their years. Stepping out of their comfort zone to work with high school and college kids is a big step for any youngster. It's also a step that needs to be taken if a young person is to achieve their potential.

It's important to get around those who will raise your expectations and challenge you to new levels of excellence. It doesn't matter if you are the best or if you even have a clue of what you are to do. If it means enough to you it's important to take the risk and throw yourself in with all your energy and effort.

Take the step that takes you out of comfort,
