I wrote a story about my mom when she lived in Germany. One of her friends who gets my e mails made a copy and took it over to her. The next time that my mom and I talked on the phone she said that she was happy that I had enjoyed her stories. She said that she sometimes wondered if I was interested in the stories.
I assured her that I was and told her that I would be foolish to not want to hear some of the stories that she has told me. My mom turned 88 years old this year and she is still very sharp. I explained to her that she is like a walking, talking history book and it's educational and important for me to hear what she has to say. It's important for any of us to hear the stories of our parents and grandparents.
Times have changed. At one time in our history traditions, rituals, and good old stories were passed down from generation to generation. Everyone likes a good story. Stories let us know what the world was like at a time when we were not here. Stories inform and educate us and help us understand times, cultures, and people better.
It's important for young people to seek out their parents and grandparents to learn of some of the traditions of their families and to help them learn traditions that they might carry on when they have families of their own.
Young people need to realize that older folks enjoy talking about their experiences and about the past. It's a good thing for a youngster to take the time to listen to the stories of someone who is older. It develops patience, knowledge, and a sense of history that would otherwise be difficult to capture. There are many walking, talking history books available to us if we only take the time to ask to be told a story.
I'm thankful that my mom and dad always took time to tell me about their earlier lives and the things that they learned. It helped me to better understand the things that shaped them into becoming the people that they were. It helped me respect the sacrifice they made for me and the love that they had for me. I hope I can tell my kids stories that make a difference for them.
Ask someone to tell you a story,
