It is very important that symptoms of diabetes be identified early. It is a serious disease and one that can cause long-term damage to the nerves and kidneys, and poses a very real threat of heart and eye problems if the disease is not remedied.

The problem with diabetes is that the symptoms often go ignored for a long time. Most people with pre-diabetes signs are not even aware that they are suffering from the disease; they will often attribute their symptoms to common, every-day illness or fatigue. Many of the symptoms can seem almost inconsequential, allowing them to be brushed aside for years before they ever become a cause for concern.

There are certain symptoms that are specific to the various stages of diabetes; however there are several symptoms common to all:

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common symptom of diabetes as the muscles and cells are failing to receive sufficient glucose through the blood. Because of this, the muscles and cells don't have the energy needed to function properly, and this results in constant fatigue and often, shortness of breath.

Frequent Urination

When there is an imbalance in the body's blood glucose levels, the body tries to correct that by increasing urine production. The kidneys will go into overdrive, trying to eliminate the excess glucose in the blood, resulting in frequent urination.

Unusual Thirst

Because the body is eliminating a large amount of fluids, those fluids will constantly need to be replenished. In a desperate attempt to replace lost fluids, the body will remedy the situation by causing you to feel thirsty constantly.

Excessive Appetite

A body suffering from diabetes will have blood rich with glucose, however because insulin (which helps the cells to utilize glucose) is in short supply, the cells and muscle tissues will be starving. The cells and muscles will send starvation signals to the brain, and these signals translate into a constant feeling of hunger.

If the symptoms go untreated, the disease can quickly progress. This will result in further complications such as:

Blurred Vision

Arteries and small blood vessels in the body are damaged by high levels of glucose in the blood. When the small blood vessels behind the eyes burst, this clouds the fluid in the eyes, leading to clouded vision.

Weight Loss

While weight can fluctuate slightly, if you experience unusual and unexplainable weight loss, this may be a symptom. This is a danger sign that means that the body has begun feeding off itself, and it will lead to more serious problems.

Frequent, Slow-Healing Infections

Because the body is unwell, frequent infections are common. Many women complain of regular, persistent thrush and vaginal itching. Both men and women often contract regular yeast infections. Cuts and wounds are often slow in healing.

Because diabetes is such a serious disease, these warning signs should never be ignored. The longer a sufferer waits to get help, the more serious their condition will become; so if you have concerns, address them with a doctor.
