The urology void sensors can be described as simple and robust strain gauge devices used to study the flow rate. These void sensors feature an amplifier which can be adjusted for better and sensitivity to match any system.

As is well known, urology is that branch of medicine which deals with urinary tracts of males and females, and the reproductive system of males. The medical professionals who specialize in the field are referred as urologists. These professionals are trained to diagnose, cure, and manage patients with urological disorders.

The organs covered under the field of urology are the kidneys, urethra, urinary bladders, and the male reproductive organs. The urology void sensors feature a 3 meter lead formed from a flexible PVS outer and an extra-flexible core. The devise is cosseted from overloads and can also measure up to 1 kg.

Besides, these sensors interface directly with the ambulatory recording and various other recording systems. The urology void sensors are fully implantable wireless pressure sensors which are produced to examine bladder pressures in the vivo. This sensor system includes a small commercial pressure die connected through a catheter to amplifying devices, wireless transmitter, microcontroller, battery, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) or computer to obtain the wireless data.

Moreover, these urology void sensors are completely implantable and also transmit pressure data once per second. This pressure detection range is 1.5 psi gauge with a resolution of 0.02 psi.

The pressure sensing platform in these void sensors is divided into three sections as listed below:

Catheter lead

The catheter lead contains the pressure sensor and joins it to the sensor node. It includes a piezoresistive pressure sensor attached onto a ceramic printed circuit board with UV epoxy.

Sensor node

The sensor node contains three components - amplifying electronics, microcontroller and wireless transmitter, and the battery. The open end of the catheter lead is connected on to a custom-designed circuit board which contains a quad micro-power, single supply operational amplifier.

Wireless communication

The sensor node communicates with a complementary receiver station which is then connected to a computer. The data is sent by this sensor node in a hex format which comprises of a timestamp, the amplified pressure data, a unique ID tag, and the remaining battery voltage.

The urology void sensors are capable of constant and real time measurement and monitoring without affecting the comfort of the patient or hampering his movements.

Moreover, in addition to being simple and easy to use, these urology void sensors are also cost effective. Therefore, the diagnosis and management of urologic diseases has, undoubtedly benefitted from the urology void sensors. To conclude, the urology void sensors are helpful in short term urological studies as well as monitoring the patients. Besides, these void sensors demonstrate a quick temporal response housed with high linearity.
