For a long time, many folks in the West believed that martial arts was only about using the hands and feet for close combat encounters, so they were surprising when they saw karate weapons being used in movies and during tournaments for the first time. While martial arts is still very much a style of fighting based on using the body as your primary weapon, staffs and blades and other tools have their place and serve their purpose, as misunderstood as it might be.
Many fighters like to be overly critical of the use and relevance of these highly unusual weapons, disregarding their effectiveness in combat and often deeming them impractical. However, much of martial arts is about disciplining and training your body to become an efficient fighting machine, which requires an abundance of speed and agility and sharp reflexes. Even though you may be much better off to grab a sword or just use your hands than to fool with a pair of nunchaku or a triple jointed staff in a heated fight, actually training and sparring with such things will help you develop an amazing fighting physique.
Like just about anything else you can think of, these items had to come from somewhere, and where they came from is actually a bit surprising to many people. The imperial armies and other wealthy fighters already had access to finely crafted swords, which was a very common weapon throughout world history, but the more unique weapons that you see in the world of martial arts originated from ancient farming tools and were actually used to farm.
While you might imagine that these items were crafted by ancient kung fu masters for the sole purpose of training to become powerful warriors, they were really just basic digging and harvesting tools that had been altered and repurposed. Each weapon had its own purpose, both on the battlefield and out in the crop fields, whether they were used in planting seeds, turning the dirt, or grinding up fresh grain for use in making food and medicines. The farmers trained themselves to use these altered tools to fight off random attacks, because they were too poor for swords and already had these tools in hand anytime invaders showed up.
Today we have more practical ways of defending ourselves, and karate weapons are almost never used outside of a martial arts class or a Hollywood studio. They are still highly regarded training tools, and if nothing else, they are incredibly entertaining to see used in a contest of martial skill or an over the top action scene.
