Chariot horse racing goes back to ancient Greek and Rome. It was one of the most popular of sports. During the middle ages knights were honored for their horsemanship. In the 1600's horsemanship became an art of the royal courts and many riding schools were established in Italy, Austria, England and France.

Horses have long been used in warfare. Until World War I, the cavalry was an important branch of all armies. Today, most people do not need to know how to ride a horse as they did years ago.

The automobile and other means of transportation have replaced the horse. Farm boys and girls learn to ride and cowboys ride herd on horseback. But few other people need to ride at all. Horsemanship has become almost entirely a sport.

In England and in some parts of the United States, hunting on horseback is popular. In many city parks there are bridle paths for horseman.

The best horsemanship is seen at race tracks, at rodeos, at the circus and at horse shows. Today thoroughbred race horse tracks can be enjoyed by the whole family and not just a "sport of kings" as once called. Not just for high stakes gamblers either, not by a long shot!

To keep ticket sails up and concession stands making money even more bag of tricks have been pulled out. Just like concerts have been tagged to rodeos, thoroughbred race horse tracks tag other festivities for the whole family. Ideas range from kiddies parks, concerts, batting cages, etc., on to the same grounds to make some income in off season.

Horse racing is alive and well throughout the whole world. United States is actually not that big when you compare the whole horse racing industry on a global scale. Daily Racing Form dates back to 1897. The horse racing industry made it through hard times in the early 1970's then in the early 1980's as well. Think of what industries do diminish in hard times?

The race horse industry actually includes steeple chase race meets, buggy racing, quarter horse racing, hunting and thoroughbred race horse tracks.

The race horse industry is actually a much regulated industry that employee's a lot of people between the race horse pedigree and breeding record areas working with the other racehorse industry. The thoroughbred race horse tracks have withstood the test of time, will name callers be here when the dust settles?

Gary Cooper was raised in a family where they all loved and worked horses in one way or another. His father A D Cooper was a respected long time resident of Irving Texas. He was a horse trader and put shoes on race horses at nearby tracks. Gary was a jockey at race tracks throughout the 1970s. http://whoisgarycooper.blogspot.com
