If you're among the millions who suffer from anxiety attacks, you're undoubtedly searching for ways to reduce the psychological and physical symptoms brought on by anxiety. Rest assured there are ways of reducing and even eliminating those symptoms.
The first and most crucial step in learning to fight anxiety attacks is to determine the specific cause of your own anxiety problems. Anxiety is brought on by mental, emotional or physical triggers. You must discover what triggers your own attacks in order to affectively counter them.
Avoiding the Problem
If you know that small spaces are a physical trigger for you, avoiding such locations may work, at least in the beginning, while you learn to counter your anxiety. After all, you won't always be avoid your triggers, which means you'll need to develop methods for keeping anxiety at bay and for fighting through attacks.
Avoiding the triggers for your specific anxiety problems will only get you so far. You will eventually have to face the underlying anxiety issues. Don't underestimate your own ability to beat anxiety.
Self-Help Methods
Many people find relief from anxiety through self-help techniques, like self-hypnosis and meditation. Self-help techniques are effective for some individuals when used alone, though other find the greatest level of success in fighting anxiety attacks by combining self-help with other methods, including seeking professional assistance from a psychotherapist or counselor.
Psychotherapy
There are two primary forms of psychotherapy which are effective for most of those who suffer from anxiety: cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy.
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - In cognitive behavioral therapy, patients learn to take control of and manage their fears by adjusting their own standard thinking patterns. In essence, through this type of therapy, you learn to change the way you see your own fears, which allows you to more readily counter those fears and fight off anxiety in the process.
• Exposure Therapy - For those who experience anxiety as a result of physical or emotional triggers, exposure therapy can be quite effective. This psychotherapy method requires you to exposure yourself, under the trusted care of a physician, to the things, places or situations that cause your anxiety attacks. Through continued and gradually increased exposure to your triggers, you can eventually master your fears and eliminate anxiety attacks.
Anti-Anxiety Medication
Many patients and doctors immediately jump to anti-anxiety drugs as the means of dealing with anxiety. While many of these medications can be helpful in minimizing symptoms, they do not eliminate anxiety problems. Most people must use medications in combination with other treatment methods in order to deal with the underlying cause of their anxiety issues.
Deal with Other Conditions
There are instances where anxiety is related to another mental or physical ailment. For instance, more than fifty percent of those who experience anxiety also suffer from clinical depression. In order to deal with their anxiety, these individuals must also receive effective treatment for their depression.
Likewise, physical conditions like asthma, heart disease and high blood pressure can also be accompanied by anxiety symptoms. Treating these physical ailments can help fight and eliminate anxiety attacks as well.
