Periodical or chronic headache is a very common problem for many people. Even though painkillers will help for the moment, many people try to avoid these for a variety of reasons, instead trying to cope using alternative methods.

Having headache (including migraine) often leads to taking days off sick and generally having a lower quality of life, more visits to a doctor and taking medication more often.

There is scientific evidence to claim that acupuncture helps to make headaches less frequent and less severe. Even more interesting is the fact that the effects of a course of treatment involving up to 12 visits to an acupuncturist, seem to still be there a year after the treatment.

In other words, the results are long lasting!

So acupuncture is an effective and safe alternative to conventional drugs (aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen, used individually or in combination.), that often have quite severe and possibly dangerous side effects.

The side effects include lethargy, stomach ulcers, constipation, nausea, and shallow breathing. None of these unwanted effects happen when you have acupuncture, it is much safer.

So how does acupuncture work?

In traditional oriental medicine the needles are placed in spots on the body that either stimulate or inhibit the flow of energy - "Qi" - that flows through our bodies.

According to the ancient theories illness results when the energy flow is disrupted for some reason. Western medicine cannot quite explain how it works, but it is generally agreed that it does work.

Over the last few years an interesting alternative to traditional acupuncture has emerged , researched and developed in Russia and the US, and made into a practical and useful home treatment aid, particularly in Sweden.

This is the "acupressure mat", also known as the "Hedgehog Mat". This version of the ancient Indian "spike mat" or "fakir mat" consists of thousands of small pressure points, packaged into a flexible and soft cotton fabric.

The idea is that when you lie down on it there are so many points that some will inevitably hit the right acupuncture spot and trigger your immune system into action, thus relieving headaches and migraines.

It will also increase blood flow and make your muscles relax. Since it requires no physical effort and no training, it is extremely easy to use and can be used everywhere and at any time, by anyone.

It is being used for not only headache, but also insomnia and muscle pain, amongst other problems.

Acupressure is a form of acupuncture which doesn't require needles, originating from India. It is a success story in Sweden, where it has been the health product of the year the two last years. If you are looking for a natural headache treatment and would like to avoid pain killers then this is the headache cure you have been looking for!
