As early as 1990, Ford Explorers were already being assembled but it was only in 1991 that this became available in the auto market replacing the then Bronco II model. The early Ford Explorers, from 1991 up to 2010, were sorted as SUV's with medium sized built. For the 2012 model year , the Ford Explorer was recategorized under the niche market segment of "Crossover SUV's" with full size and even garnered the Truck of the Year award in North America during 2011.
This Ford Explorer is a major key player in the uprising of this type of vehicle, SUV. In the early models, 1991 to 1994 models, there were two built selections the three- and five-door options. Transmissions types on the other hand are 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions. The entire line-up was powered by the V6 4.0 liter Cologne engine. These early models were constructed in Ford centers that are situated in Louisville, Kentucky and Saint Louis, Missouri and Valencia, Venezuela.
The next generation models were constructed during the year period 1995 up to 2001. The built style available for these generation units were three-and five-door. In addition this generation was the first one to offer high mounted central stop light that is made of neon at gate lift. Transmission options include 4R55E 4-speed automatic, the 4R70W 4-speed automatic, the 5R55E 5-speed automatic and the M5OD-R1 5-speed manual transmission. Engines on the other hand were V6 4.0 L cologne and V8 5.0 L Windsor.
The year 2002 up until 2005 marked the production of the next Ford Explorer model. The entire array of this third generation models were built with five-door style. Engines available were V6 4.0 L Cologne, V6 4.6 L Cologne and the V8 16 valve Modular. Three transmission types were offered the M5OD-R1HD 5-speed manual transmission, 5R55W 5-speed automatic as well as the 5R55S 5-speed automatic transmission.
Come 2006 up to 2010, one more Ford Explorer model was released in the market. This time the fourth generation of Ford Explorer which is an exclusive five-door model equipped with either V6 4.0 L Cologne, or V6 4.6 L Cologne or V8 24 valve Modular engines. The options for transmissions are 5R55S 5-speed automatic as well as the 6R 6-speed automatic transmissions. This generation model was much bigger in size and with tougher chassis when matched with its third generation prototype. Further new offerings of this model are the tire-pressure regulating system and the power driven foldable third row seats.
Presently, the newest Ford Explorer in the auto market is the 2011 fifth generation SUV's. This model was constructed in the Ford plant located in Chicago, Illinois. Still the entire line up is five-door style which can be powered by either the 2.0 Ecoboost 14 or the V6 3.5 Duratec engine and a transmission that is 6-speed automatic. The exterior is well molded and modernized with its stepped-like head and tail lights. Added superior features in this model are power driven gate's lift, engine start that can either be push-button or remote controlled, windshields that are solar-tinted and with rain receptive wipers, front seats that can be cooled or heated, software that can facilitate parking, adaptive cruise control and a built-in navigational system. The power train options can manage either all four wheel drive or the 2 wheel front drive.
Ever since the beginning, Ford Explorer was able to manage staying on top of the competition. Features of this model were constantly subject to improvement that resulted to its very high quality. Despite its superior security, durability and comfort features, the Ford Explorer stays reasonably priced.
