Hives is a very itchy red rash that can include a severe stinging and burning sensation. Hives can suddenly appear on the skin for no apparent reason. The affected areas become swollen and often move around and can affect all areas of the body. It can also cause major swelling, and not limited to the face, hands, feet and eyes.
Treatment for hives can vary but the most common one is the use of anti-histimines. Many of these products can be purchased over the counter without a prescription at most grocery and drug stores. Common brands are Benadryl, Claritin and Zyrtec. When using these medications, it is important to follow the package directions and to be aware that some will make you drowsy.
Often a hives outbreak will keep you from work or school. If not, you may only want to take them at bedtime, depending on your activities.
The anti-histimines are used based solely on the core reason for hives outbreaks. Our skin cells release histamines and other compounds causing fluids to leak from local blood vessels. This ultimately leads to the swelling and rash called hives.
How to get rid of hives can be a challenge. There are many things that can cause an outbreak. Here are some of the most common triggers.
Stress is often reported as the leading reason for hives outbreaks.
Food borne outbreaks such as eating certain types of shellfish, strawberries, some nuts and even tomatoes can be a culprit. Food borne outbreaks are usually easy to identify. If you ate something or an excess of a certain item other than your normal diet, it may be easy to identify this as the cause for the hives outbreak.
Insect bites and stings may also cause this allergic reaction.
There are some other rarer causes such as a reaction to water, overheating of the body as in intense exercise and very hot showers.
Getting rid of hives may be as easy as just identifying the factors that led to the outbreak in the first place.
However, if you do develop the condition, the most typical hives treatments include, along with anti-histamines, applying ice packs and/or cold compresses and topical anti-itch creams such as calmine lotion to the affected area to alleviate swelling, burning and itching sensations. You should avoid aspirin, but you may try acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the pain and discomfort.
If you experience trouble in breathing, blurred vision or dizziness, you need to seek medical attention at once. Severe cases of an allergic reaction can cause serious health risks or even death.
