  • Can Natural Cancer Remedies and Self Care Help Survival in Cancer?
I have just read another of those articles in a medical journal that stated that psychological interventions do not affect survival in cancer patients. However what the article was really saying that on the existing evidence the studies they reviewed have not shown, to the satisfaction of the statisticians that there was enough evidence that psychological interventions affect survival.

  • Natural Cancer Therapies: Supplements and Drug Cautions
"XXX May Offer Health Benefits, But Evidence Still Limited" was the headline about a natural cancer therapy. This was in sharp contrast to an overblown television report about a new cancer drug which was reported to be the hope of all cancer sufferers for the decade.

  • Natural Cancer Therapies: Comparing Like With Like
The media often deals harshly with a person who has cancer who turns down medical treatment, turns to natural cancer therapies and subsequently dies. The success of a natural cancer treatment is measured on whether the person who is ill survives a natural lifespan. But this is not the case for medical treatments. Medical treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy often use much "softer" evidence of success.

  • Natural Cancer Therapies vs Conventional Treatments
There is a much quoted study on the natural cancer therapies websites. The quote says that 75% of cancer doctors would not take chemotherapy for cancer due to the toxicity of the drugs. The quote is very much out of context but is indicative of some of the issues. However the paper says very much more.

  • Natural Cancer Therapies and Mainstream Medicine
Medicine thrives on the concept of evidence based medicine. All our training of medical students encourages them to expect to practice using the best evidence available. And there will be few people out there who would argue that we would want to have a good reason to use expensive treatments - we want to know they will work.

  • Natural Cancer Therapies: Can Having Good Friends Reduce The Chance Of Dying?
Another animal study has shown the importance of having company to prevent cancer occurring and in reducing of the likelihood of death from cancer. It is clear that for both animals and humans having good friends definitely improves the quality of life, and now, possibly, lack of friends might even be a matter of life or death.

  • Alternative Cancer Therapies
There are very strong feelings surrounding alternative cancer therapies. There are frequent television snippets and online blogs bemoaning the deaths lost to alternative treatments used after well recognized medical treatments have been turned down by the patient. However it is important to check whether the drugs work enough to be useful enough to the patient. Statistically proven does not mean clinically useful to the patient.

  • Cancer Remedies: Is Hope Real or False?
When a person has cancer that has a very poor prognosis doctors are very wary about the patient having what they call "false hope". They get very angry with individuals and information websites who suggest that the fatal consequence might not have to happen. From their perspective it is cruel to suggest that someone has the power to heal when it is, in the doctor's opinion, patently not true. But is that stance justifiable?

  • Cancer Remedies: Cut Cancer Deaths by 75% in the US and Canada
In 2009 a group of well respected medical researchers published a paper and an open letter. They brought together research that showed that breast and colon cancer deaths could be reduced by three quarters if people increased the vitamin D levels in their blood. This can be done by spending time in the sun along with supplementation that is both a cheap and effective cancer preventive and cancer remedy.

  • Natural Cancer Treatment: Spontaneous Remission Or Something Else?
Spontaneous remission has been known about for centuries. Unexpected recovery when a person was expected to die in the past was considered a miracle and many praised God for the intervention. The great majority of physicians now consider spontaneous remission or regression as an oddity which they can ignore as it falls outside of their explanatory models.

  • Natural Cancer Treatment: Can exercise really prevent cancer from spreading?
Exercise is well recognized as being a factor which can reduce the risk of cancer by an average of about 30-40%, with some cancers being reduced by up to 70% in some studies. But what is the situation with people who already have cancer? Can exercise help to reduce the risk of recurrence or even death? There are studies which indicate this is the case in breast and colon cancers and possibly others as well.

  • Natural Cancer Prevention and Treatment: Do I really need to go to the gym?
We keep hearing the health message that all people should undertake physical activity and most of us, if we listen to it at all, think, "Yes, yes. I'm sure it is a good idea." And then we promptly forget about it. However until I started to research the medical papers I didn't have any idea of just how important exercise was in both preventing and treating cancer. This article will focus largely on the prevention aspect.

  • Natural Cancer Treatment: Is fat consumption the problem or is it lack of exercise?
For many years, and even continuing now, there has been an understanding that fat in food is bad and contributes to cancer. And with the upsurge in obesity and obesity related illness there are still many doctors, nurses, nutritionists and dieticians who condemn the eating of fatty foods. However is fat the villain it has been made out to be?

  • Natural Cancer Treatment: Sunlight for Melatonin
Day and night are natural rhythms of life. For millennia people had to live largely by the natural cycles of light and dark. It is to be expected therefore that the human body has used these cycles to promote health and that varying from them too far might have negative consequences. It seems that this is the case. Sleep disorders, depression and even ageing and cancer are some of the conditions that are affected by poor "light hygiene".

  • Natural Cancer Treatment: Meditation
Major religious traditions have known for millennia that meditation can improve health. While some medical practitioners are still skeptical about its usefulness this is largely because they are not aware of the amount of evidence there is in the medical literature. Meditation not only changes the electrical activity of the brain but impacts on both the hormonal cascades and the immune system.

  • Cancer Remedies: Do I Have to
It is usual when someone has cancer for the individual and society to think in terms of using every possible drug in the medical arsenal to attack the cancer in an attempt to subdue and kill it. Many a patient has been told that they have to "Fight the cancer." This is the case whether the cancer remedies being sought are conventional medical approaches or one of the natural cancer treatments. But do we really have to "Fight" cancer?

  • Natural Cancer Treatment - Avoid Cancer by What We Eat
There is much passing reference to the need to eat more vegetables in order to avoid cancer, but beyond the urging of some health promotion staff little seems to be written in the lay press in any detail at all. Many doctors are wedded to the fast effects of antibiotics. And if foods cannot give that sort of effect with the majority of people then a goodly number of them will dismiss the impact of food as being "not really important".

  • Relief Remedies: Drugs and their Efficacy
When we are looking for relief remedies for a medical condition many in the community turn to their medical practitioner to help them find a remedy for their problem. In this they make the assumption that their doctor is the best person to advise them as to what can make them better. As a result of this belief most expect that any drug prescribed by their doctor will be effective, but is this the case?

  • Natural Cancer Treatments: Is it Necessary to Become Vegetarian?
There are many schools of thought in the cancer alternative medicine literature about what is needed by way of diet in natural cancer treatments. The vast majority suggest that someone who wants to heal themselves from cancer must give up meat, especially red meat. However is this the case and what about other foods? Are there any similarities there?

  • Remedy for Health: Sunlight and Natural Vitamin D
For years we have been told to avoid the sun to reduce the chances of getting skin cancer. This is very important for places that have strong sun, like here in Australia. But have we gone overboard and inculcated a fear of the sun to such an extent that sun avoidance is leading to vitamin D deficiencies? Are these contributing to other diseases, including other cancers? Is the sun a natural remedy for health?

  • Remedy for Health: Butter
It has become common knowledge that butter is one of the enemies of health along with all of the other so-called bad fats. Science has categorically proven it! But has it? Is there really the agreement that the health promotion advocates would have us believe? Perhaps good yellow butter has been demonized and isn't the enemy we have been lead to believe. Perhaps it could even be a remedy for health.

  • Cancer Remedies: If Medicine Can't Help Are There Any Natural Cancer Treatments?
It is devastating for someone to be told that medicine has run out of options and there is no more treatment that can be offered. Some patients adapt to what they consider the inevitable. However some people fight tooth and nail to have a longer period of time before they die. They want to explore every option. Is this realistic? Are there any cancer remedies or natural cancer treatments that have been shown to work?

  • Natural Health: Can we really reduce our chances of cancer by good self care?
There is some important research coming out in the biomedical journals that includes a new understanding at what is happening at a molecular level in cells. The new findings are that a large amount of damage is done by inflammation despite its importance in healing. However when inflammation is overwhelming or has too many components to it other pathways can occur leading to chronic diseases like arthritis, heart disease and cancers.

  • Natural Health: Selenium, should we take it?
Selenium is one of the minerals that is essential to health and it is a problem for those of us where our soils are deficient. There is much in the complementary health literature that says that selenium can prevent cancer, but is that the case? What does the research really say and what could that mean for each one of us?

  • Drugs and your doctor: Taking charge
Doctors talk amongst themselves about patients' unrealistic expectations about the effectiveness of drugs. Quite often this conversation is done with shaking of heads and often sarcasm in their voices. However it is time that we ask the question: Just who is being unrealistic? Why should the patient (or the country where socialized medicine pays or subsidizes the cost) pay for a drug that has a very low level of effectiveness?

  • Natural Health and self care: Inflammation - what you need to know
More and more research is being published in the medical journals about the impact of inflammation on the body. Most of us know that inflammation is about redness, swelling, heat and pain, usually after we have been cut or had an infection. What most of us don't know is that inflammation is not always obvious. It can quietly smolder in the body for years before making itself obvious by way of cancer, diabetes or heart disease.

  • Natural healing: use the sun reduce cancer risk
For years now we have been exhorted to avoid the sun, to cover up and to use sun screen so we can avoid getting skin cancer. However unfortunately it looks as though we have thrown the baby out with the bathwater. We desperately need some sun on our skin to make vitamin D, and a lot more of it than the doctors and health people have been recommending for a long time.

  • Do I have to stay positive all the time for the best chance of recovery from serious illness?
People who are seriously or terminally ill are frequently exhorted to "stay positive". Positivity has become a new creed for some. However when you feel you are facing a long period of illness stretching out in front of you possibly or probably culminating in death it can all seem too hard. Is it necessary to be positive all the time for the best outcome?

  • Osteosarcoma with lung secondaries and lived more than another 40 years???!!!
What can we learn from people who, medically speaking, should have died but didn't? June is one of these. She was not expected to survive the cancer in her hip at 21, and certainly wasn't expected to survive for decades after her first lung metastases occurred. She had less than one chance in 100, or even less than one chance in 1000 of surviving with an excellent quality of life. So how could that happen?

  • Spontaneous Remission - do we know enough to encourage it in other cases?
Spontaneous remission and the placebo effect are the often used explanations to explain medically unexpected recovery. However those who wish to explain away such totally unlikely recoveries as spontaneous remission completely miss the point. If just one person lives a good quality of life despite a terminal diagnosis then we should be learning from those people, not sticking another label on them as a pretend way of explaining what happened.

  • Medical Miracles - Do they still happen today?
Doctors are very wary about the idea of medical miracles but the idea of miraculous healing has been around for thousands of years. For those people who are facing terminal or severe chronic illness the desire for a miracle healing can be immense. Is this a legitimate hope or a false hope?
