When the time comes for you to sign up with a new car insurance company, renew with your current company, or if you're in the process of shopping around for the best auto insurance quotes, it's good to ask the agent a handful of important questions. It's true that certain rates are already set, and that your driving record and other factors will influence the deal you get, but asking some basic questions will help the process along. Sometimes, you won't get all the best discounts or the lowest auto insurance quotes if you don't ask for them.

One question to ask is if you're getting all the discounts that you qualify for with that specific company. Safe driver discounts or senior's discounts are normal, but you may qualify for other discounts such as safety feature discounts, eco-friendly discounts or small town discounts. Just ask about all the discounts that your car insurance company offers and go through each one with the agent briefly to figure out which ones apply to you.

Another question to ask is if all the coverage you have or have been advised to get is really worth it. Sometimes, the premium you pay for collision coverage doesn't make good financial sense if your car is only valued at a few thousand dollars. You may end up totaling your car, paying the deductible, then only getting a thousand or two from the car insurance company, after paying a lot more than that in monthly premiums.

Before you sign up for new car insurance, it's always wise to ask your agent about scenarios where the company won't reimburse you. Sometimes, car insurance policies aren't just black and white. Some of the coverage policies and details can get quite complex, so it's wise to know exactly where you stand in every claim situation. Also, ask about the pay out policies for if your car is written off in an accident. Some car insurance companies will pay the actual cash value of the vehicle, while others will give you an agreed upon amount. These numbers can be farther apart than you'd think, so it's a good idea to figure it our beforehand.

Repairs are another area where it's good to ask some car insurance questions. Not all car insurance companies will pay for original manufacturer parts to fix your vehicle when it needs repairs. If it's important to you to always have parts by the original manufacturer, be sure to ask what the policy is before you sign. Some companies get aftermarket parts put in your car when it needs repairs. These types will still work, but they are usually less expensive and not from the original manufacturer of the vehicle.

The point of asking specific car insurance questions is to find yourself the best coverage at the best prices. Having strong coverage is crucial if you're a regular driver, but it pays to shop around a little and ask the right questions so you're always covered in every situation.
