...at least try hard to not let them leave without gaining something.

It could be making a sale. But it could also be to have them subscribe to your newsletter. Or join you in your downline for an affiliate program you're promoting.

I still come across way too many web sites that I can visit and leave without ever having been asked to buy or join something! Well, if you're not going to ask me to take any action...bye-bye and I'm gone.

There are many different ways you can offer something, obviously, but here's a few basic rules you need to apply to all of your web sites:

1. There's got to be a clear call for action. You want a visitor to actually do something, whether it's taking you up on your latest product offer, adding their name and email address to your list by subscribing to your newsletter, joining your membership site or affiliate program...it could be anything depending on what the purpose of your website is. But ask them to do it!

2. Make it clear what you want, and quickly. People are not going to read through 800 words of text just to figure out what it is you're offering. Make it clear what you want them to do or what it is you're offering within the first 2 paragraphs of your text, and then you can go on explaining all the benefits of doing so. But not the other way around!

3. I still come accross web sites that have their newsletter subscription box halfway down, or even at the bottom of the page... If that's you then you're leaving bags of money on the table each day. This box has to always be above the page fold, so that each visitor will get to see it, even if they don't scroll further down your page at all.

4. To encourage them to take the action you have planned for your visitors, there should be incentives. I call it ethical bribes. "If you subscribe to my newsletter right now, I'll give you this free eBook stuffed with affiliate marketing tips and tricks". Something like that. This will dramatically increase your conversion numbers, as long as your 'bribe' is relevant and complementary to your main offer.

5. Either have a pop-up, a pop-under, or a 'peel' script running on your site. But do just one of these things, or you'll annoy people and alienate them from you.

These things are not difficult to implement, but they'll make all the difference in the world.
