Overeating causes acid indigestion problems but, nevertheless, you can still enjoy your food and have a convivial meal with friends without being a glutton at the dinner table.

However, should you persistently indulge to excess over an extended period you may well be in for some serious repercussions.

At best, in the early stages, it may well be a simple "sour-apple stomach ache" or you may be subject to a bloated feeling, belching, heartburn and indigestion or excess gas; all most unpleasant.

Significantly, you can also get some quite worrying chest pains similar to a warm burning feeling in the centre of the chest which may persist for one or two hours before some relief.

These aches and pains can be exacerbated if you are bending over or even lying down. Also if you are a devotee of the more exotic foods with specialist spices and sauces you may suffer additional discomfort; in fact, some citrus fruit juices may contribute to your condition.

Many of the acid indigestion problems which occur from overeating encroach on the duodenum and also on the lining of the stomach. When the lining of the stomach and the duodenum are affected there may well be other problems like ulcers. In some extreme cases these can be life-threatening.

Furthermore, it is important to clarify the problem and decide if it is really acid indigestion or perhaps it may be heartburn. Acid indigestion problems are centered on the abdomen while heartburn is more usually associated with an aggravated esophagus.

The usual suspects causing acid indigestion are fairly well known but, even so, many sufferers consistently ignore the major causes which include:

* Excess alcohol
* Foods with excessive fats
* Late night dining
* Overeating
* Smoking
* Spicy and saucy foods
* Caffeine overload

You may well feel that much of the pleasure has gone from the meal table if you are denied what, on the surface, may appear to be the simple pleasures of life.

Nevertheless, the very first step in ridding yourself of all acid indigestion problems is to cultivate a health lifestyle; it's that simple.

Alternatively, you can live with your acid indigestion problems and gain some relief, albeit temporary, by pumping antacids into your ailing body; no a recommended action for any length of time.

However, the smart people accept the better-quality way out and bite the bullet and decide to accept the facts of life that acid indigestion can be cured by changing your lifestyle.

There are many herbs which are known to be successful in treating acid indigestion and a medically qualified herbalist will soon be able to prescribe a sensible course of treatment.

It may come as a surprise to many people that herbs can be effective in treating acid indigestion symptoms but, in truth, they can be just as effective as antacids; and without the side-effects.

Before you succumb to the blandishments of the drug companies you owe it to yourself to take advantage of the bounty that nature has bestowed on us.

There are many other ways to combat your acid indigestion problems and self-denial of the known causes is one place to start.
