Knowing which acid reflux foods to avoid could well cause you some difficulty if you are a devotee of Mexican foods which are often hot and spicy.

It's not that there is anything wrong with the food, far from it. It's simply a matter of the digestive process struggling to cope with the various ingredients.

If you like your food hot, tangy and spicy and it causes a warm, burning sensation to come up through the chest and throat, you may well be suffering from acid reflux.

Acid reflux sometimes referred to as heartburn, can often be a quite frightening experience as many people feel as though they are undergoing a heart attack.

However, heartburn is quite easy to diagnose and is not usually life-threatening, though if the attacks are frequent and excessively painful there could be more serious trouble ahead.

It will help to know how the digestive system works if you really want to get to the bottom of your condition. Many people forget that digestion starts as soon as you pop some food into your mouth. When you start to chew, and many folk feel that it is necessary to chew each mouthful twenty times, the food is immediately mixed with a goodly helping of saliva which is the commencement of the digestion process. When adequately chewed, and here it is well to emphasize adequately chewed, the food passes through the esophagus on its journey to the stomach.

The sphincter, a group of muscle fibers, connects the esophagus to the stomach and is a kind of control device which, when it is open, allows food to go into the stomach. If all is working correctly the sphincter prevents stomach acid from flowing back through the esophagus and through the chest and throat. Heartburn happens if the sphincter is relaxed or weak and is not doing what it is supposed to do.

Some people are more susceptible than others to hot and spicy foods and it may well be that they have an unusually relaxed sphincter; hence the burning sensation as stomach acid flows back. However, even for those with a healthy digestive tract the list of acid reflux foods to avoid can be a long list.

As well as hot and spicy you would be well advised to steer clear of foods with a high fat content. Additionally, you should also review your approach to carbonated sweet drinks, coffee and alcohol. Also, if you are one of the diminishing group of people still smoking cigarettes you really should quit if you are serious about your health in general, let alone any digestive problems.

Alternatively, you may be eating all the right foods but at the wrong end of the day. Most nutritional counselors will advise that the main meal should be no later than around 7.00pm; a tall order for most people. However, the advice is to try to keep the evening meal light and certainly do not overeat however succulent the food.

So, like most things in life, isolating acid reflux foods to avoid is simply a matter of trial and error and then a good deal of common sense.

Discover which Acid Reflux Foods To Avoid and be sure your digestive tract is operating correctly. There are many natural cures for acid reflux indigestion to choose from.
