About two years ago, I wrote articles on all kinds of new and emerging technologies, and perhaps due to this, or an over-active imagination, I soon found myself dreaming up the most ideal car-concept of the future. It was more a problem solving type of concept for the problems we face on today's roads where so many accidents still occur on a daily, hourly and minute-to-minute basis.
As most car accidents happen due to driver error, why not create a system where driver error is removed from the equation? That seems the logical way to go. I was not alone in these ideas it seems, as someone by the name of Charles Rattray also seems to share this vision.
Many people may look at this as a far-fetched dream, or perhaps an impossibility, but considering all the tools we have at our disposal today, it does not seem such a far-off idea after all.
We may be talking about twenty years into the future, but the technology required to implement this is already available today. It is simply a case of harnessing and integrating all these different kinds of technologies into motor vehicles of the future, to produce totally autonomous modes of transport.
Charles Rattray, a final year student has designed a concept vehicle that makes heavy use of all these current technologies to produce a system whereby these technologies work together and dovetail. His idea incorporates the principles of swarm robotics, combined with information technologies, high-definition cameras, and sensors to produce a fully autonomous vehicle capable of travelling on it's own, or alternatively even within a group.
When they travel in a group, the vehicles adopt the 'Platoon' mode, which greatly reduces the energy consumption of the vehicles by huddling tightly together with spaces of only about 20 cm between the vehicles. Since every movement of the cars are controlled by artificial intelligence, sensors and cameras, the probability for human error is virtually eliminated.
You would be forgiven for thinking this sounds too far-fetched, but then again, so did travelling to the moon only 7 or so decades ago. I truly believe this is the way to go when one considers the amount of lives that would be spared with such a system.
People all over the world still love their cars, whether they are classic, modern, or even vintage. Read more on all types of cars and even check out a few travel tips
