We live in a culture of fear that is only too real when you consider the violence in the world, foreclosures and job losses. The collapse of the auto industry, and the scandals that surround our trusted advisors have left many in complete panic about their future. At this point, the news is bleak. The worsening economy is spiraling into the trillions of dollars. People worry about whether they will lose their home, even if they won't, and they worry about losing their jobs, even if they don't. That worry, anxiety and doubt translate into fear, into depression, illness and broken spirits. This is depressing isn't it? It's hard to see beyond the limitations when all around you is bad news.
But there is another side to fear that we don't talk about. Fear is primarily imaginary. We fear the worst in our minds. We are already in the worst case scenario long before we have the physical evidence that it will be the way we imagine it to be. We fear dying, we fear intimate relationships, we fear for our health, we fear for our finances, we fear for any number of things that have not yet happened. And in living in that fear, we curtail a life that could be filled with joy, with desire, with a rich abundance of what is good about the world we find ourselves in. We spend too much time in the what if's of negativity, and not enough time with the what if's of abundance. We live in limitation, holding tight to everything we have, but the truth of the matter is, we will all do much better if we could just let go of the reigns a little bit, expect the best results and presume that it will be that way.
For many, living means surviving. You have survived so many challenges, so many ordeals that have made you who you are and you have faced these challenges with courage, or not. When we step up to the events of our lives we have a choice. We can approach it with trepidation and assume the worst, or we can approach it with an attitude that we will see what happens, but be optimistic about the results. That's thriving.
So many of us live half-shelf lives. We wait for a better tomorrow, for things to improve, but we take no action to move things forward now. We are passive in life instead of active and life is about growing and exploring, and creating. So where are you in this equation? Are you thriving or surviving. What do you choose?
We are all capable of creating joy. It is about choice, and even when it feels like we don't have a choice, by staying still, we're choosing. We can easily free ourselves from the glue of discomfort if we really want to. I could worry that I won't have enough money tomorrow, and hoard every penny right now, or I could assume that I'm going to find work, and that I have skills, talents and experience that people can use. We are all needed whether we know it or not.
So ask yourself where are you fearful. Where are you holding onto the negatives in your life, and how would you like to live your life differently. Living a life of choice is empowering. Being Fearless is not the absence of fear, but the decisions and choices we make when it shows up in our lives.
Live life on your own terms and forget about what others are saying and doing around you. Make decisions that count for you, that allow you to live a satisfying life. To get beyond the culture of fear that pervades everything start with this
1.Stop reading newspapers with their screaming headlines of doom and gloom.
2.Refuse to participate in endless discussions about how bad things are.
3.Turn off the TV and stop watching all the 'sky is falling' reporting
4.Read some self-development books so you can take care of yourself
5.Start changing your thinking to a more positive mindset
The only way we can defeat the culture of fear is to take a stand against it. The bad news won't change, but your attitude toward it will.
"Be the change you want to see" said Gandhi. It all starts with you.
