The CanoScan 9000F is a color image scanner that is designed to impress you from the moment you turn it on because of its sophisticated look and rich features. The set up is fairly easy as with the majority of flatbed scanners. All you need to do is plug in the power cord and the USB cable that is supplied, install the software, unlock the scan head, and put the scanner in place. According to Canon, the scanner has drivers and software for most of Windows and Mac operating systems.
There are two choices of photo editors, as the bundled software is mainly focused on photo scanning. The easier program to start with, if you are a beginner with scanning, is the Arcsoft PhotoStudio 6. If you are a more advanced user, the Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 will be the one you will want to use. If you are not already in that category, you will eventually outgrow PhotoStudio and want to use this one. Both Twain and WIA drivers are also installed as part of the installation process, as well as Canon's own scan utility. Because of these drivers, a scan command allows you to use any Windows program for scanning. Text pages can be scanned and turned into editable text with the OCR module.
You should be comfortable scanning with the 9000F, especially if you are at all familiar with any of the recent photo scanners by Canon. You can scan from a program using either Twain or WIA drivers, or Canon's scan utility can be used. This method has earned praise because it is easy to use, and if you want, you can start a scan by using any of the 7 buttons on the scanner itself. Some of your choices are Email, Copy, four buttons that are related to PDFs, and a Finish button. It is a nice option to be able to scan multiple pages and turn them into a PDF file. If you don't want to make all of those choices, you can just use the Auto Scan button. Unless you want to make your own settings, this feature will do everything that you need.
The 9000F uses an LED light source, as with a lot of scanners today, and this gives consistent scan speeds, along with eliminating warm up time. It doesn't matter if you have just finished another scan, or if your scanner has been sitting for a while without being used. If you are concerned with the speed of your scans, this is a very good scanner for you. If you are doing slides, they can take 18 seconds for prescanning, and to take a scan and save one slide at 2,400 ppi can take 41 seconds.
