Choke collars are some of the most popular dog training collars that you will find today. These kinds of collars are used extensively by the dog or puppy training community where they are often referred to as correction or constriction collars. A properly fitted collar is very important and if it is fitted correctly it makes the collar easier to use and a lot safer for the dog. To size the collar correctly, measure your dog's neck with a tape measure and ensure your dogs choke collar is no more than 2-3 inches larger. So if your dog has a neck 12" in diameter, you would want to buy a training collar that is 14" in length. Chain slip collars are usually sized in two inch increments.

Too large a collar will run the risk of accidentally falling off and the extra length of chain can result in far too strong a correction which may result in injury.

When you are fitting a training collar on your dog, make sure the part of the chain which is connected to the leash should be on the top of the dog's neck so that the collar releases the instant the leash is loosened. Training collars work best by being able to make the collar tight and loose in a fast manner. The first part of the correction is tightening the collar, and second part of the correction is making it loose.

After you practice just a little bit of patience, you should find that you and your dog will be able to take walks together without having to pull on the collar a bit.
