One of the most common methods of promoting weight loss is to cleanse your colon.

Colon cleansing works on the principle that if you clean something then it will function more efficiently. The colon gets bunged up with all sorts of foodstuff waste that cannot be processed. As a by-product of the digestive system this sticks to the walls of the colon thereby making it work less efficiently.

The colon is the final part of our digestive system and it performs the function of extracting salts and water from the solid waste produced from our food before it is expelled from our body.

A colon cleansing diet is therefore a good thing, as it will assist in the process of keeping the bowel regular and therefore avoiding constipation, which is both harmful and uncomfortable.

Psyllium is used in a colon cleansing diet of which the seed husks are the active ingredient. They are extremely high in fiber and therefore effective in use because waste products stick to them as they pass down the digestive tract.

Bran has been used for decades and this is a by product of milling whole grains. The outer casing of the milled grain seeds is utilized before it is discarded and used in animal feed. Bran fulfills a similar role to psyllium and there are many recipes such as bran muffins that are popular as bran in itself is not a particularly nice product to consume.

Oat bran powder supplements can be sprinkled onto your food and this will enhance the meal from a digestive perspective and will help clean out the inside of your system.

What has become more popular in recent years is the use of acai berries as it is claimed that they have a high fiber content and offer the other benefits of improved digestion and detoxification.

More people are turning to natural organic products for digestive aids such as herbal tea and lemon juice. They assist with colon cleansing and are a natural alternative to colonic irrigation, which is both expensive and uncomfortable.

There are many side effects associated with a clogged up colon such as gaining weight, tiredness, feeling bloated and the ever-embarrassing production of human gas especially at the most inconvenient of times!

I suffered terribly with this latter problem but when I started to clean my colon I noticed that I lost weight and the other conditions improved as well. I do not like bran and find acai berries not to my taste so the most effective way for me was to drink special herbal organic tea.
