Autism is a disorder that is characterized by impairment in social and communication skills. The number of children being diagnosed with autism has increased drastically in the past few years. Autism is caused by an abnormality in the brain. However, health researchers have not been able to determine the exact cause of this abnormality. There has been evidence to suggest that diet, mercury sensitivity and genetics can play a role in the development of autism.

The symptoms of autism will present themselves before the child turns three years-old. Failure to babble by the age of 12 months and not saying a single word by 16 months are some of the early signs of autism. It is also important to note that some children with autism will regress. This means that they will develop normally up until the age of 2, but then lose their language or social skills.

Autism has a direct effect on behavior. Children with this disorder will appear as though they are in their own little world most of the day. They will have trouble making friends and holding a conversation. They may also have trouble understanding feelings and treat other people as objects.

Children with autism also have a tendency to want to keep a consistent schedule. They may throw temper tantrums and become aggressive if a routine is broken. Additionally, autistic children also have a very short attention span and narrow interests. Because children with this disorder are prone to behavioral problems, most of them are required to attend a special school.

There are a number of treatments available to treat the behavioral problems caused by autism. Anti-anxiety medications, psychostimulants and antipsychotic drugs can help alleviate some of the symptoms of autism and improve behavior. It is important to note that those medications treat the symptoms, but do not treat the underlying disorder.

There are a few things that parents and caregivers can do at home to help manage the child's condition. Even though many autistic children cannot understand feelings, parents and caregivers should do their best to make sure that the child feels loved at all times. It is also important to keep the child on a consistent schedule.

There has also been evidence to suggest that some children who have autism may benefit from a casein or glutein-free diet. Glutein is a protein that is found in foods that contain wheat or barley. Casein is a protein that is found in dairy products. Additionally, autistic children will also benefit from speech, occupational and physical therapy.

The prognosis for an autistic child depends on the severity of the disorder. Many children with this disorder grow and live a relatively normal life with their family or in the community. However, some people with this disorder will have to be placed in an institution.
