If you've got a pair of brown boots, you've got a style classic. Brown boots, whether classic equestrian-style tall boots, trendy ankle boots or something in between, are a staple of any fashion-forward wardrobe. Even though autumn and winter may come to mind first when you think of boots, they can be far more versatile than you might think, and can actually work through the seasons. Brown is an especially flexible and versatile colour choice for year-round wear, not as heavy and dark as black, yet still neutral and complementary to many clothes colours. Plus, there are so many different shades of brown, from lighter caramel colours to rich mahogany and dark chocolate brown.

It's definitely true that a good pair of brown boots is a natural accessory for autumn and winter. Pair tall brown boots with skinny jeans or cords, cosy layers like long-sleeved tees, boyfriend blazers or knitwear and a bright knit scarf, and you've got a casual outfit that will work on any chilly fall or winter day. When you need to dress up a little, tuck velvet skinny trousers into the same boots and add a jewel-toned blouse, dangly earrings and a cuff bracelet or two. When it's cold out but you're in the mood for a skirt or dress, wear leggings or tights with your leg-baring outfit and your tall boots for a dressy yet stylish look that will still keep you warm.

Brown ankle boots are great for the colder months too. They look especially chic with skinny jeans, but can add a trendy vibe to dresses and tights as well. To keep the overall look appropriate to the season, add cardigans, scarves or wraps in fall and winter.

You don't have to pack your boots away when spring comes around, though. Get more mileage out of your boots by combining both cold-weather and warmer-weather pieces. For instance, rather than wearing your tall boots with wintry staples like corduroy trousers, try pairing them with a spring dress covered with a cardigan instead. The knitwear gives a bit of visual heft to a floaty spring dress, and coordinates well with a boot. This is where the brown colour really shows its versatility; while black boots would appear too harsh for the warmer seasons, brown can carry you through as a great neutral that's not too heavy-looking.

While knee-high tall boots may be the more classic shape, brown ankle boots are great year-round, too. Their abbreviated height makes them a cooler option for warmer weather, and looks stylish with cropped trousers and cuffed skinny jeans. Add a spring blouse or sailor tee, lightweight scarf and bright-coloured bag, and you've got a fresh warmer-weather look.

A wide range of brown boots can be found at Duo Boots.
