So, you and your family need a break, a chance to spend some good quality time to spend with each other? But is it a break from modern living you feel you need? Maybe a change of scenery or home. There is a way to get more out of your home with a log cabin? Log cabins are not as simple as you may think, and are available in all manner of sizes and designs nowadays, and not just the image that first pops into your head of many felled trees stacked up for the walls.

Log cabins is now a very loose term for a property built from wood. In the U.K there are many homes built half in wood and half in brick. These are known as timber framed houses. But the majority of a log cabin is made from wood. And there is a large variation of timber needed for the construction of your log cabin home. If you are familiar with or work in construction, then a self-build would be a wise and cheaper option than having to pay tradesmen to construct the log cabin for you, and you will also be able to spend more time on the construction, as you would be working longer hours and weekends too, if, of course you choose to. But when you have decided to build the cabin on your land, think carefully about the delivery aspects, such as tight country lanes and space to the front of the site to allow for the storage of the materials, and also that you have enough sheets to cover the timber from the elements. But the good thing about undertaking such a challenge as building your own log cabin is that at some stages other members of the family can help, so when you do move in, there will be a nice family feel to your home, as every member helped with the construction.

Another good reason to choose to have a log cabin is that you may be able to ask for adjustments to the size or shape of the cabin, so as that it can fit perfectly into the space you have available. Of course, this will more than likely effect the overall price of the build, but can also help make the most out of the space that you have available to you. This way you can maximise the potential of the land that you have. You may want to reposition the master bedroom so the morning sun shines through the windows, or maybe having a balcony added.

The main thing to consider before acquiring a log cabin as a new home is how the home is going to work for the family, how the property flows and feels like a real home, which is good for family activities such as eating meals together. So allowing for a dining room could be essential. Also, if you have young children, or plan to, then perhaps a games room would be a good idea.
