How Does Mobile TV Streaming Work?

Mobile TV streaming is the process of viewing programming that is available from a network, cable or satellite channel over the internet. You can do this on your smartphone by installing an app. Apps that you can install are offered by content providers for the iPhone, a smartphone that runs Google Android or a Windows Mobile device. You can also do mobile TV streaming on an iPad or other portable computer via a WiFi connection.

Delivery Method

Streaming works by sending data to an app that is installed on a smartphone using the internet. This is done via the data plan in use from your mobile phone provider. This is similar to watching TV and movies from a desktop or laptop computer, as data is transmitted the same way. An app that is installed on your smartphone converts the data stream into sound and images that are displayed on the screen. A downside of this delivery method is that you are viewing the content on a screen that is rather small.

Apple iPhone or iPad

Go to the iTunes App Store from your iPhone or an iPad and download a streaming app. You must have iTunes installed to gain access to the App Store. Launch the app and enter your log-in details to browse the content that is available for the app. Select the content that you want to view and the streaming will begin.

Google Android

Go to the Android Market from your mobile phone that is running the Android operating system. Install a streaming app by downloading it to your phone. Launch the app and enter your log-in information for access to the content available for the app. Select the programming or channel that you want to view to start the stream.

Windows Mobile

Tap the "Start" button on your Windows Mobile phone and then tap the option for "Marketplace. Select the option for "Apps or Games." Browse the Marketplace and download a streaming app. Open the app and enter your log-in information, if needed, to access the content available for the app. Navigate to the TV channel and then select "Play" to begin the stream.

Using WiFi

If your mobile phone has internet access you can access content to stream from any website. Open your mobile phone's web browser and sign on to the WiFi hotspot, if required. Navigate to a website that has a TV show or programming available for streaming. Click on a link for the TV show or content to view in the browser to start streaming.

Tips

Streaming apps available for the iPhone, the iPad, Google Android and Windows Mobile phones can be downloaded using the web browser on your desktop computer. However, installing downloaded apps is done by first connecting the device to the computer and running the installation.

Warnings

The streaming of mobile TV will consume large amounts of data, which can eat into your monthly data plan. Some WiFi hotspots may also restrict access to websites that stream data, such as YouTube.
