It's inevitable, as the calendar nears the end of the year, that cold temperatures and possibly some snow, rain, or a mixture of both will find us. That means it's time to put the short-sleeved shirts away and pull out the long sleeves, sweaters, sweatshirts, and hoodies. Or is it? You can actually extend many t-shirts into the winter season with a little imagination and a few accessories. Don't stick those Ts in the back of your drawer yet. Read the following tips to give your winter wardrobe a little pop of summer.

Layering is always a great way to stay warm and stylish at the same time. And, if you find yourself in a warm situation, you can easily cool down by removing a layer. Your favourite summer t-shirts can provide the base of your layers, then you can start adding some winter cheer. A soft fleece or knit scarf around the neck provides a ton of warmth because it's holding all your body heat. If you want those arms covered, too, pair t-shirts with a cardigan. Cardigans come in a variety of styles, colours, and patterns to suit many different tastes. Chunky, patterned knits are in this season, as well as longer cardigans, sitting below the hips. Most crew neck t-shirts present well under a cardigan and V-necks also look nice. Make sure the cardigan isn't being overshadowed by an overly adorned t-shirt.

Jackets are an excellent way to dress up a favourite T while also adding the warmth needed in the winter months. Jackets should fit well, coming in at the waist, and can be left open or buttoned. Jackets are made in a variety of materials. Good materials for winter include corduroy, jean, or heavy cotton. If the t-shirt is patterned, opt for a solid coloured jacket, and if the T is a solid colour, either a solid or a patterned jacket will work. Pull colours from the t-shirt to find a coordinating jacket.

For a casual look, layer a long-sleeved T under a short-sleeved one. Choose coordinating colours, or use white as the base, long-sleeve layer. This look is most appropriate for weekends, the gym, or shopping. Add a fun knit or fleece hat and gloves to complete the look. Add a cotton hoodie on top of both t-shirts, and you've got a versatile, layered look that will keep you warm throughout the day. You might even take this look to the ice skating rink or the sledging hill.

With the right combinations, you can wear those summer shirts all year long. Remember to pair like materials together, and make sure the material of the shirt complements that of the jacket, sweater, or hoodie. It might be best to leave sheer t-shirts or lighter, summer materials like linen in the closet until the weather hits those warmer marks in the spring.
