There are people who prefer to work out at home than join a fitness club. You may find they have their own home gym that lets them workout instantly at any time of the day. Aside from the smaller space you need when considering a rowing machine, it is generally less expensive than elliptical or cross trainers and treadmills. It also gives you a great overall workout without blowing your budget for your personal home gym.
If you have an active and continuous exercise routine, it is best to choose a durable rowing machine so that you will be able to benefit from it in the long run. Consider it as a long term investment.
