Creating compost does not have to be back breaking work. Creating compost in your home with a kitchen compost bin doesn't even have to be difficult; it is much easier than it seems. Add some minimal additions to your daily clean-up routine and you will be a contributor to the cut back of recyc-positive trash flooding landfills, make your garden (and the earth) smile, and be on your way to a life of subtle eco-heroism. Turn your gaze to the points that follow, so you can take your composting to a new and convenient level.
Easy, Peesy, 1-2-3sy
Convenience is everything in the world we live and work in. Because everyone is so busy, routines have to be razor-sharp routine and streamlined for convenience and ease. An efficient system of composting with a kitchen compost bin will not make the process a hassle, but make it a piece of the normal clean-up associated with mealtimes. The two most labor intensive components of composting are the separation and aeration. Look for a system that uses the anaerobic breakdown process, like a bokashi composting bin, that doesn't depend on air and does not require separation of dense proteins from vegetable scraps.
Stink Free
Pain-free composting is a process in which there is no smell! If it stinks, there is something wrong (I mean a smell that makes you curl your smile and your toes down and around in a bad way. An earthy smell—think mushrooms—never hurt anyone). Along with convenience, a kitchen compost bin has to be free from olfactory bombs otherwise your eco-crusade will crash and burn.
The Bug Factor
This is another aspect of composting that gets a bad rep: the fly factor. This is similar to the smell factor: without banishing the bugs, this composting process will not be effective. Fruit flys are a fact of life, so you have to be pro-active in prevention. This means using a system that doesn't rely upon air for breakdown or you can be a crafty composting critter and outsmart them by putting your temporary kitchen compost in the fridge, using a filtered compost bucket, or using some potting soil to cover over the kitchen scraps in your bin.
Ease: A Component That Always Gets a Smile
Everyone likes simple and easy. Simple and easy rule our way of life. For your home-scale composting program to succeed, a vital factor is relative ease. A Kitchen compost bin should be stored in a place that makes it easy to get to when meal time is at an end. This allows you to get rid of your scraps with little to no extra work—simply part of the normal process. Every aspect of the composting process has to be easy. Make it easy enough to have kids take over responsibility of the composting. Easy works!.
If you can master the art of convenient, bug-free, stink-free, and easy composting, you will be well on the way to a successful compost crusade. Luckily, you have an arsenal of techniques to choose from, including red worm composting, bokashi composting, classic composting, tumbler composting, and a host of others to help create exquisite and earth friendly compost.
