The great thing about composting is the fact that it is a natural process that anyone, including kids, can take part in and enjoy. When it comes to composting for kids, there are a few composting components to keep in mind: it has to be simple, done in a short period of time (to cater to a smaller attention span), and fun.
Compost is organic materials that have broken down. Compost is anything from the fruit that you were eating for a snack to leaves in the fall to animals that have died. Air and organisms break down complex things into smaller things adding soil fertility. Composting for kids is catchy because they are learning the natural cycle of things, the goodness of recycling, and the liability of waste. It will also get their mind around a project that gets them thinking about sustainability. Watch out when you throw that apple core in the trash, though, and you get a scolding from a zealous young composter.
Kids are just about as curious as cats. Natural curiosity is a great way to get kids interested in a green practice that will set a super sustainable foundation for future practices. Kids love venturing outside and looking at the compost that is in the compost pile, tumbling composter, or simply turning over a log to show the many tenants that will most likely be the same as in compost. Anytime that gooey and "scary" insects and crawly things are involved, kids are there!
Worms have the greatest fans in kids. Composting for kids brings together worms and kids for an earth saving pairing. Kids love to hold them up in the air and look at them from different angles. Kids enjoy the way the burrow through the ground. Kids really dig—and get freaked out—by how they crawl up your arm. No matter how you cut it, kids love their servings of worms. Composting for kids allows kids to monitor their wriggly friends break down family food scraps if you turn your kitchen composter into a red worm composting bin. Worms will take care of your scraps and the kids will take care of the worms. Good deal.
There are myriads of ways to get your kids interested in composting:
*Keep track of what is going on in the compost from day to day by inspecting the compost and keeping a journal with sketches. This will become a routine that your kids really enjoy--the more pictures of bugs and worms, the better.
*Give kids the "important" job of saving the earth through compost. Put your little eco-son or daughter in charge of the compost and watch them beam with responsibility. This is a good way for them to have a duty that they can enjoy—but be sure to build the compost position up in their mind before handing it over—hint-hint.
*Make a compost documentary. Kids love video as much as creepy crawlies. What kids love the most is creepy crawlies on video.
Not only can composting for kids be a naturally engaging and educational opportunity for your green-focused child, but it can also be fun. Kids love fun; kid fun along with environmental sustainability equals a pretty good pairing.
