Knowledge is power. So starting a new endeavor means gleaning as much info you can from as many sources as you can. A great adventure to get involved in, for the sake of waste reduction and the environment, is in-home composting. Keep these simple concepts in mind when you start scouring around for a kitchen composter.

Keep the Goal In Mind

A goal is important; a goal is like a port for a ship. Why are you composting? Is it because you have a garden and you need fertilizer? Are you doing it for environmental sustainability? Think about things that will make your composting project as simple and easy as possible. Do you want to keep your kitchen composter on the counter, do you want it outside, or both? What kind of composting system do you want to have? There are systems that are aerobic and anaerobic. Think about the goal for your composting project and it will help you materialize your vision.

What Are You Trying To Do?

What role is your kitchen composter going to play? Are you looking for a temporary holding pail that can transfer between larger bins or are you looking for a kitchen unit that will be placed in the kitchen? There are many ways to tackle the issue. There are some systems that use air to incite the breakdown process and some that do not need air, like bokashi composting. With the bokashi system there is no need to separate dense proteins like meat and dairy. Or maybe you were hoping to use red worms to break down your kitchen scraps for the worm castings they generate to anoint your garden with. There are many types of composting systems that function in different ways that can cater to your needs.

The Search for Style

Even choosing a kitchen composter is a matter of style, especially if you plan on keeping it right out in plain sight. You wouldn't want a beat up old 5 gallon bucket perched on your counter, so after considering your overall goal and function of your compost bin, think about what you want it to look like. Some people choose to put their composters out of sight, but others choose to display them. If you want to go with a compost pail that, little by little gets filled, there are innumerable choices; from stainless steel to ceramic to stylized pails. Even if your composter is outside, consider if the style gels with your backyard area. Are you considering more compact or do you like something with more functional bulk? Whatever your style, find a composter that fits your preferences. Because of the large selection of composting systems out there, you can find one that fits your aesthetic sensibilities.

The Price

The good news is that no matter your money considerations, you can find a kitchen composter that will hit your budget bases. If you want to do it old-school-penny-pincher style, you can use a coffee can as a compost pail. You can also use canning jars as a temporary way to store your compost in the fridge before bringing it to the outside compost pile or bin. You can also build your own compost bins and red worm composting bins. On the other hand, if you are outfitted for the purchase and would rather save your time, look into great composters offered for sale online. Whether searching for ways to stretch a dollar or simply spending it on what you want, there are composting choices en masse.

Now you have some simple questions answered and hopefully you are clearer on how you want to proceed with doing your home-base waste reduction project. The good thing about composting is that it is an easy and straightforward process that will cut down on environmental strain, will give you free garden fertilizer, and will allow you to participate in the green movement that we all need to stand up and support. By getting a kitchen composter you are casting a vote for the future of the earth in a small, but meaningful way.
