Everybody is conscious of the food they purchase in stores today. When the food is brought to stores from all corners of the country—and the globe—is the food really safe? What about preservatives in foods? What about genetically modified foods? Are "organic" foods the answer? Why are they more expensive when they supposedly are raised without chemical herbicides and pesticides? The good news is that there is a simple and sustainable answer that comes straight from nature: gardens and organic compost; a recyclable system that will supply you with all the food you need, over and over…for a little bit of work and a little bit of love.

Organic Compost: A Miracle That Happens Over and Over

When vegetables are broken down from complex parts into simpler ones, this is the process of organic compost. All things in nature are organic, but the word has come to mean anything that has been produced without the introduction of chemicals. It is important to keep in mind that anything in nature naturally composts (decays or breaks down) to feed the soil and the whole earth.

Organic Compost: Food and Plant Medicine

Everyone loves multi-purpose tools. The great thing about organic compost is that it is a multi-purpose process. Not only are you recycling waste that, under normal circumstances, would go to a landfill and not break down, but you are also turning your scraps into fertilizer that will feed future plants. You are getting rid of waste and growing money at the same time (take a look at fertilizer costs at your local hardware store and see what I mean). The compost is a healthy food for your plants which will, in turn, provide healthy food for you—as Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said so many years ago.

Seriously Simple…You Gotta Love That

Composting is a natural process that takes place whether you like it or not; whether you allow it to or not. This kind of makes it like digestion. The normal person has no real understanding of the mechanics of digestion, but they still do it efficiently. We can, as activists that are part of the process, do things to help the processes function better. With digestion, we can eat foods that don't make our guts work so hard, including eating a large selection of raw fruits and vegetables. When it comes to organic compost, we have to provide an environment that will allow the compost to break down at its fastest rate, without getting too wet, too dry, or with items such as high protein foods that will become rancid and possibly spoil the process.

The best organic compost comes from a process free of any chemicals. Whatever you put in your compost will be in your compost. If you add conventional fruits and vegetables that have had pesticides and herbicides and other questionable agents applied to them, it will be carried over to the compost as well. Even though in its ideal range (anywhere between 90 to 140 degrees fahrenheit), it is unknown whether the chemicals that are sprayed on crops are broken down. For that reason, it is a good idea to get natural, untainted food to put in our bodies and compost piles for optimum health.

So Many Choices…

If you are thinking about composting, or if you would like level-up your composting game, you have options. One interesting way that is gaining in appeal is bokashi composting; this style is anaerobic and works off the power of fermentation to breakdown your kitchen scraps. The interesting thing about this style is that it efficiently breaks down anything, including meat and dairy. If you would like to take a different approach, consider red worm composting; let worms break down your food scraps for you…and provide you with garden-enriching worm castings. Win-win situation. There are many ways to get your composting fix and eat your compost enhanced veggies, too.

The beauty of composting is the plain fact that no matter what leftovers you have they will be reused as a meal or as an environmentally sound form of recycling. Look into the many ways to produce organic compost and always feel good about reducing waste, saving money, and doing a small service that is big in the eco-scheme of things.
