Stress is a big problem for many people today, and, just as there are medications for everything else, there are many used to treat stress. Taking medication for stress or anxiety, however, isn't something you can decide without careful consideration and advice (and perhaps a prescription) from your doctor. In this article, we'll be helping you sort out some of the issues regarding stress medications.

One of the newer drugs that's sometimes used to treat stress today is Buspirone, which is better known by the brand name BuSpar. This drug is a mild tranquilizer, which is gentler and slower acting than Xanax and similar sedatives. Buspirone increases the serotonin level in the brain, which can help relieve feelings of stress and anxiety. It's also less likely to cause drowsiness or memory loss, which are some of the undesirable side effects of many sedatives and other anti-stress medications. It's also less likely to create dependency, another serious risk with many prescribed stress medications. At the same time, there are still potential side effects with Buspirone, which may include nausea, upset stomach and dizziness. There are a variety of over-the-counter medications that can be helpful with stress, and you may want to try one of these before getting a prescription for something stronger. You can buy individual herbs in the form of capsules, tea or tablets, and there are also combination formulas that contain a variety of natural substances. One of these is Seredyn, which contains Passion Flower and L-Theanine, a natural substance found in green tea. Don't assume, however, that because you can buy something without a prescription, or because its ingredients are advertised as all natural, that it's completely safe or has no side effects. Read the labels and research any ingredients you're not familiar with. Also, if you're taking any other medications, be sure to ask your doctor if any natural supplements you're considering for stress are compatible with what you're already taking.

One particularly severe form of stress comes in the form of panic attacks. Some people start experiencing these suddenly, while for others they're the result of stress building up over time. Either way, these are very upsetting and disruptive experiences, and can make it difficult for the sufferer to even want to leave the house. If you're experiencing panic attacks, your doctor may suggest certain medications to relieve your symptoms. In some cases, antidepressants are prescribed, especially if you're also experiencing depression. Sedatives and SSRIs may also be given to individuals to help eliminate panic attacks. Aside from treating your symptoms, it's important to get to the root of the problem and find out why you're having these episodes. In conclusion, we now know how serious stress can be, and how it can be dangerous to our health. While medication isn't usually the first course of action to take when you're experiencing stress, in some cases it may be necessary. When other options haven't worked, medication can help reduce your stress symptoms so you can start regaining control of your life.
