The internet has a lot to offer people of all ages, but it poses certain dangers to children. As a parent, you want to make sure your children aren't stalked, bullied or pursued by predators. This is an issue that many people are concerned about, but fortunately it's not that hard to keep the risks to a minimum. Let's go over some of the best ways to keep your children safe while they're surfing the net.

You can use technology to your advantage when it comes to safeguarding your kids. By restricting access to certain areas, or using software that allows you to control what your kids can access online, you can rest more easily when you can't be looking over their shoulder. There are many such products, such as Net Nanny and Bsafe Online that give you a wide range of options for controlling where your kids can surf when they're online. Of course, you can't watch your kids all the time, and you still have to be concerned what they might be doing on other computers, but gaining some measure of control over all the computers under your own roof is a good first step when it comes to keeping your kids safe online. It's a good idea to limit the amount of time your kids are allowed to be online. You can enforce this yourself, or you can get some help by using software that can restrict access to the computer in any way you decide. There are several advantages to this approach. You can prevent your kids from going online at certain times when you might not be there to watch them. Additionally, it can ensure that your kids aren't spending too much time online, which could be interfering with doing their homework or even getting enough fresh air. Remember, the more time they spend online, the more likely it is they'll get into some kind of trouble there.

When it comes to online safety for kids, you also have to consider mobile phones. If your child has a cell phone, or especially a smart phone, this is another way to access the internet and possibly receive messages from strangers. Remember that most cell phones are also cameras, so remind your kids never to send photos of themselves to anyone they don't know. Many phones also have built in GPS technology, which means that any of their online friends can track down where they are at any given moment. That's another reason it's so important to be familiar with all your kids' online friends and screen them. It's not that difficult to protect children from potential online dangers, but it does take some diligence. Kids naturally like to have a certain amount of freedom, but when it comes to the internet, this can work against them if they unknowingly get involved with the wrong people. As long as you keep a watchful eye over your kids' internet activities, you should be able to feel confident that all will be well.
