Keeping your children in the best possible health doesn't involve any magical formulas -it's a matter of following some common sense guidelines on a regular basis. Sometimes you have to go against their wishes for their own good, as kids will often choose junk foods and computer games over fresh fruits and outdoor activities. Let's take a look at some of the best ways you can safeguard the health of your kids.

Like everyone else, kids need a certain amount of sleep to be in optimum health. Actually, they need more sleep than adults, up to 10 hours per night. Young children, and sometimes older ones as well, can often benefit by taking a nap in the middle of the day. Some children need to be coerced into going to bed at a reasonable hour, as there's always the temptation to stay up and watch TV or go online. You should put a strict curfew on such activities, as these can interfere with much needed sleep. Kids who don't get enough sleep are likely to have trouble in school, behavior problems and be more susceptible to illness. Your kids need plenty of sleep, even if they don't always realize it. There are now many programs and teams for kids to join that can help them get enough exercise. For kids who naturally take to a sport like baseball, football or hockey, you won't have to encourage them very much to join a team. For kids who aren't interested in team sports, there are other options, like karate and other martial arts, gymnastics or swimming. It's not a good idea to try to force a particular activity, such as your favorite sport, on a child, as this can have the opposite effect that you want. The last thing you want is for the kid to feel like physical activity is a chore or punishment. Try to find out what he or she enjoys so that it will be something they look forward to.

Part of staying healthy involves practicing personal hygiene and staying clean. A simple habit like washing your hands with soap and water can prevent you from catching many infections and diseases. Kids often have to be reminded of this, so don't hesitate to repeat it until it's drilled into them. Daily bathing and showers, and washing the entire body, including the hair is also important for health. Teach them that if they ever get a cut or other injury to tell an adult right away so it can be promptly cleaned. These are all issues that can help kids stay healthy and prevent unnecessary problems from occurring. You have to contend with many issues to keep kids healthy these days. You have to keep them away from so many potentially bad influences, from unhealthy snacks to secondhand smoke to spending too much time online. The best approach is to encourage them to develop healthy interests and a liking for at least some healthy foods. That way you won't always be having to force them to make the right decisions.
