No matter what area of retail you currently work in, make a few simple and inexpensive changes in the work place. Empower yourself and make a difference.

Bring a smile to the faces of your customers and your colleagues. check your sales desk, till point, coffee shop tables, bar area and restaurant. Are these areas clean and free of clutter? Would you enjoy shopping, eating or drinking here?

Take a fresh look, clean and tidy them up, enhance your customers first impressions of your offering, what ever area of retail you work in.

Your colleagues will be pleasantly surprised at not having to work in a muddle, they will benefit from being able to find what they need to do their job, once you have taken the initiative and put everything in order, it would also be a good idea to get them on side with you, all the members of the team need to work together, for it to work to everyone's advantage.

Do you have a dish of inexpensive wrapped boiled sweets at the counter, payment point or sales desk? Not expensive to organise but effective with your customers.

Are there fresh flowers in view. This would depend on your retail area, a few inexpensive sprigs of flowers in bud vases or similar, make a difference to the overall look of your establishment, tables and common parts.

Flowers do not have to be expensive, get a couple of bunches and split them down as required. Alternatively consider pot plants, or some of the everlasting varieties.

If you work in a restaurant or coffee shop, do you put glasses on the table? If you do, make sure they are clean, then stand a napkin in them, inexpensive plain white will do, colour co-ordinate if appropriate and cost effective.

Do you use point of sale, posters or any kind of advertising in your establishment, most certainly you do. This is one of the easily overlooked areas, ensure all of your point of sale, advertising or posters are current, fresh and up to date.

Think about your customers, they are vital to your business. Listen to what they have to say, what works for them and what does not. Always try to exceed their expectations. Remember this is where you obtain ideas for the future.

The retail market place is rapidly changing, by taking notice of what your customers are purchasing, the comments they make on your products and services, along with any item that they ask for that you do not currently stock or offer, your establishment will have a better chance of staying profitable and in business and you in a job.

Remember this final point. Customer loyalty will be driven by the people working in stores, shops, bars, coffee shops etc. Shoppers will want to see committed and motivated staff that know the business they work in and the products and services that are offered. Secure your customers loyalty, secure your job.

Experienced retail professional, with a particular interest in the success and development of the independant retail business. A major part of the success of the small to medium size business is their staffing. There is a need to recruite and engage staff that are committed to exceed customer service expectations.
