What is Independent Living?

Nobody stays young and as we all age we might have problems that require us to consider changing or adapting to a new living arrangement. Seniors may think of moving or are planning to move into an assisted living facility. Nonetheless, preparing and planning ahead for this problem could ensure control over their situation. When the time comes, seniors could decide if senior independent living is good for them.

Independent living provides living arrangements to seniors at the age of 55 or above. They offer numerous housing styles, which includes single-family dwellings or apartment-styled houses. They are also known as senior housing, retirement communities, senior apartments, congregate living, and retirement homes. Most of these communities accommodate seniors by private living quarters and have shared amenities of community halls, recreation rooms, laundry rooms, swimming pools, and transportation area. These senior establishments are also fully equipped with grab railings and emergency call-buttons.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development may shoulder the cost of these senior housings as low-income housing under the Section 8 housing bill. This allows seniors to acquire senior units at a low cost, which is based on their income. Only 30 percent of the senior's income will be the basis of the rent cost. This can enable seniors to live comfortably, especially those on a fixed income. Sometimes, however, it takes time for one apartment unit to be available for rent.

Independent Living Housing

Independent living housing is another means for low-cost living for seniors. The cost of these housing facilities is the same with the area's housing market. It will only cost higher if additional amenities are taken, such as swimming pools and transportation assistance.

Here, seniors are in command of taking care of their personal care. Laundry and housing tasks, however, may be offered in some instances. Other recreational and socializing activities could also be provided. They provide this in fun classes, such as cooking, embroidery, golfing, and many more. This is to keep the body and mind active.

Independent living housing is sometimes age inclusive. They only allow seniors who are age 55 and above, but there are those that are open to all senior retirees regardless of age. The only difference with independent living with other senior services is that they do not offer grooming help, toilet assistance, and administering medications.

It is important that you take a look with payment terms first before taking these independent housing as they do not provide any healthcare. This only means that Medicare and Medicaid as well as private insurances will not cover payments.

Independent Living Centers

Unlike other senior homes, independent living centers are classier as it is similar to a resort. Seniors get to own a condo or a single-family unit. These living centers include amenities like, gourmet senior meals, concierge services, classy interior and exterior decorations, gyms, and recreational areas.

Seniors also get the security of living with their 24 hour alert system. This removes worries and stress of living alone. This high-end independent living charges quite high; they average towards $1500 a month.

If you are looking for independent living centers, make sure they offer gated entrances, transportation area, a pharmacy nearby, grab rails, emergency call buttons, and complete recreational amenities.

Assisted Independent Living

Assisted Independent living offers home-health aides providing living assistance for seniors living in centers or assisted-living apartments for a particular number of hours each day. Help also includes grooming, bathing, and dressing.

Seniors may also have the option to stay with retirement communities and live as independently as possible, but as the level of assistance increases, they may move to an assisted-living facility where medical and personal-care assistance are provided. This will allow seniors to live in the same community for the duration of their lifetime.

For more information, you may check with your local senior centers before acquiring any of these senior living services, which in turn assures the wellness of your love ones.

An aging loved one may want to live independently, yet prefer a retirement community that caters to the needs of their age group. Visit Care For Seniors to learn more about Independent Living services for seniors.
