According to various sources in the media, UK travellers should be avoiding Switzerland if they want to go on skiing holidays. Is this a dictatorial government demanding that we all go to the Milton Keynes Snow Dome for the sake of the ailing economy? No, not quite.

It is simply a warning about the relative price of the Swiss Alpine experience. After all, Switzerland isn't renowned for much beyond the fantastic skiing it offers, when you're wrapped up in your North Face fleece. And let there be no mistake: Switzerland does offer some fantastic slopes and the infrastructure to boot.

But could you not be having just as great a skiing experience on any slope in the world? The alps aren't even the most impressive mountain range in the world - just that where the chalets are most developed, and the routes the best travelled (and therefore, surely, boring?)

UK based Ski company 'Crystal Ski' is opining the British travellers should be looking elsewhere in Europe even. This comes off the back of a post office survey. The Alps are of course extensive, it's just that the Swiss Alps are the most famous place for your family to be sporting the North Face jackets. The Alps sweep through France, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Germany as well.

The company believe that holidaymakers should consider Bulgaria, Andorra and Slovenia. Bulgaria is cheapest of all, with it being only £263 for ski equipment, lift passes, lessons and even some food and drink. You'll have to pay about £100 more for skiing in Andorra. However, this resort, in Arinsal was still named the best value resort.

It costs five percent less to visit Bulgaria and Andorra than last year. But thanks to worsening British currency, the Swiss option now costs about twenty six per cent more than it did last year. The facilities in the Bulgarian and Andorran resorts are not to be scoffed at. However, some wary travellers may question if there is much to see and do in the surrounding environs.

Andorra is interesting by virtue of being a principality. But like Bulgaria, the names of 'must see' buildings don't exactly roll off the mind. If you want to fly into a nation with a little more name recognition, the cheapest of the big four winter sports nation is the Livigno resort in Italy. In the north of the country, relatively easy access to Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and beyond possible.
