Fred Olsen cruises are a family run cruise line that has been operating in their present state for around forty years. However, the business originally operated fifty-ton wooden Norwegian schooners dating back to 1848. It was the grandson of the Fredrik Christian Olsen who established the Olsen name as one of the most important Norwegian shipping lines and in 1896 under the company name of A/S Bonheur he purchased the first steamship. Since that time family tradition specifies that most ships be named beginning with a "B".

In 1926, the Brabant became the first noteworthy Fred Olsen passenger ship. 1951 saw the Blenheim take her maiden crossing to Newcastle from Oslo and two years later followed the Braemar. These small ships were some of the most eye-catching ships of the day, but were relatively small compared to the larger ships operated by Fred Olsen Cruises now.

Today the British based Fred Olsen cruises have a reputation for comfortable well maintained ships offering a classic cruise experiences to the mainly over fifties at reasonable prices. The cruise line sails to the Amazon, Canary Islands and West Africa, Caribbean, Iberia, Iceland, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, UK and Ireland and USA and Canada. Fred Olsen also operate mini cruises and around the world voyages.

They have a golf package available on the Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Blackwatch that consists of the services of a PGA professional, competitions, social activities and shore excursions with up to four rounds of golf. This is available on certain cruises to the Canary Islands, Caribbean, Baltic and Mediterranean.

Fred Olsen cruises provide a children's program for school holidays during Easter, July, August, Christmas and the New Year, with activities and entertainment. The Arts Club is a special interest program available on selected cruises. Expert lectures instruct and demonstrate antiques, music, dance, bridge, wildlife, photography, wine tasting, painting, gardening and more.

They publish an online newsletter and a past passengers club allows members who have sailed before to receive benefits each time they book. Discounts are also available to those who book online. This company is quick to pass savings on to its customers and due to oil prices falling; they have decided to remove fuel charges until such time that oil prices increase again.
