Fred Olsen cruises are a family run cruise line that has been operating in their present state for around forty years. However, the business originally operated fifty-ton wooden Norwegian schooners dating back to 1848. It was the grandson of the Fredrik Christian Olsen who established the Olsen name as one of the most important Norwegian shipping lines and in 1896 under the company name of A/S Bonheur he purchased the first steamship. Since that time family tradition specifies that most ships be named beginning with a "B".
In 1926, the Brabant became the first noteworthy Fred Olsen passenger ship. 1951 saw the Blenheim take her maiden crossing to Newcastle from Oslo and two years later followed the Braemar. These small ships were some of the most eye-catching ships of the day, but were relatively small compared to the larger ships operated by Fred Olsen Cruises now.
Today the British based Fred Olsen cruises have a reputation for comfortable well maintained ships offering a classic cruise experiences to the mainly over fifties at reasonable prices.
