It is hard to imagine a more exhilarating start to the New Year than a ski-ing holiday. The combination of challenging, exhilarating runs combined with spectacular scenery and fresh air would be compelling enough for most, but factor in the sheer fun and frivolity of the intense aprs-ski scene at that time of year, and its little wonder that ski-ing holidays are one of the most popular sellers.

In terms of choice, the world is quite literally your oyster. If you want cutting edge facilities with soaring slopes, and the chance to bump into a movie star or two on the piste, then it is hard to escape the mystique of Vail, over in the snow shrouded Colorado Mountains. Certainly one of the great places to see and be seen, it might be too expensive for some, but unforgettable all the same.

A step down in the price league, Canada offers such a glut of options that you will be almost bewildered by the choices. Calgary offers such show-stoppers as Banff and Lake Louise, while Quebec has Mont- Tremblanc, set in a fairy tale location that looks like something straight out of a Disney movie.

If crossing the Atlantic is too expensive or time consuming, then Europe will welcome you with open arms. To push the boat out in spectacular style, you could stroll over to St. Moritz, where you might spot more stars than slopes. The resort itself is huge and challenging with fabulous scenery and the night life, with its legendary bars and night clubs, is probably the most up market anywhere on the continent. Kitzbuhel is an altogether different kind of gem, set in a magnificent Tyrolean sweep of mountains and snow splashed valleys and ravines. Brisk and cold outside, the welcome inside among numerous inns and local Gasthofs is warm and vibrant, and likely to stay with you long after you leave it behind.

You could mix it up at Chamonix in France, where soaring slopes and steaming clubs keep the action going twenty-four hours a day among some of the most beautiful landscape in France. But if you want something just a little bit different, cheaper and off the beaten track, then why not consider Andorra?

This tiny enclave is half Spanish and half French, and a total treat. In recent years it has worked hard to shake of its cheap and cheerful image, yet the prices here both on and off the slopes will still leave you with plenty to celebrate.
