This is one of the most frequently contested- and ferociously debated- questions in travel circles. In the end, it comes down to what sort of travel insurance policy you are looking to take out, as much as anything else.
Truth be told, travel is different things to different people. The business traveller is a very different creature to the impulsive souls that decide to jet off to Miami in winter because they have had enough of dear old, rain swept Britain. Then again, you might have that once-in-a-lifetime dream tripper, with sights set on a family reunion in Australia or Canada. Others might simply decide to take the caravan over to Europe for a fortnight, once a year. Different strokes for different folks.
Whatever your needs, there are probably many things you can safely travel without, but insurance most certainly is not one of them.
For the business traveller, if you're pretty set in your ways and you know that your yearly routine is going to consist of shuttling back and forth between the United Kingdom and a variety of different European cities, it's best to start shopping for a good policy three to four weeks before your initial departure date. This gives you time not just to look at the prices but, more importantly, to read the small print and make sure the policy fits like a glove.
This isn't fun- I'd compare it to wading through waist-height treacle- but it has to be done. And even if your company covers you with a corporate policy, it might just be wise to look into having something a little more substantial, just in case.
For people travelling the world on a yearly schedule, you can do far worse than booking multi-trip policy at the start of the New Year. I say this because it's as much psychological as anything else; there's a real peace of mind to be had in knowing that you are safely provided for from the first day of the year to the last. Again, give it a few days of research online and in the papers before you make a decision.
For travelling to Europe, I'd go with a variation on this theme and start looking once you have got a definite date of departure, mainly because there are so many different policies out there that wading through them all is akin to trench warfare. Go with what you think is best for you and, once you have reached a decision, book it there and then.
