If winter at home is too cold and soul destroying to contemplate, why not give yourself a late Christmas present of a few days out spent in one of these sizzling, sunny resorts instead?

Tenerife is obvious and little wonder. Four hours' flying deposits you into a world of warm breezes, volcanic black sand beaches and palm lined promenades that make chilling out a true art form. Winter? What winter?

Madeira is more sedate, languid and warmer still, with fewer crowds. Lush, mountainous and fragrant, it has fantastic waterfront lidos and secluded hotels looking out over fantastic Atlantic seascapes.

Cape Town enjoys peak season in the depths of our winter. Twelve hours flying- and no jetlag- puts you on top of Table Mountain, sipping wine against the last glow of sunset. World class beaches, nearby wineries and checking out big game could all be on your personal menu here.

Miami crackles and hums in the months just after Christmas, when it is absolutely at its best. Stretch limos cruise the length of South Beach, where waterfront bars rock and roll until the early morning hours. Stroll Ocean Drive and you literally never know who you'll bump into. Pack light- the temperature will be up in the high twenties. Even a few days here will recharge the batteries.

Rio- the name says it all. World class beaches like Copacabana and immortal Ipanema, and unforgettable sights like the Sugar Loaf Mountain form the backdrop for a scintillating escape. Coupled with the natural zest for life of the locals, Rio is an alluring lady where the heat is on in more ways than one.

Bali is serene, laid back and graceful, a place apart with its layered rice fields, smiling people and beautiful beaches lapped by calm, electric blue waters. A perfect mix of the ancient and arcane, served up with a smile and a series of dazzling sunsets.

Sydney is vibrant and open, with the mighty Harbour Bridge and Opera House, fabled beaches such as Bondi, and one of the best outdoor lifestyles anywhere in the world.

Cool and classy, San Diego combines the surfing lifestyle with the best year round temperature in the USA, and more than seventy miles of fabulous beaches.

Golfers will love the Algarve for its accessibility, fabulous courses and mellow, year round temperatures. But for a real, out of this world vibe, Thailand's beach resorts like Phuket have sun, sea and smiles strung out in a matchless setting.
