The most vital concern that needs to be attended to, if you're involved in an auto accident is to see to any personal injuries that might have resulted. The next most important task is to speak to your insurance company representative. So let's say you get in touch with your insurance agent to inform him you have been involved in an auto accident, and he appears quite helpful. He'll probably advocate a collision shop you may take your car to.
"Terrific" you may think. That saves you the hassle of having to find a shop on your own.. Besides, you wish to get your car fixed at the earliest opportunity. But maybe you are already aware of a repair shop you would rather deal with.
So you inform your agent you plan to take you car to a different body shop. However he states something to the effect of "We will not guarantee the repair should you go there" or "You'll have to pay out a lot more if you go to the shop that you pick" or something comparable.
So what to make of all this? Why is he so looking to discourage you from going to the repair service of your liking?
To solve this question, you've got to know what the ultimate aim of an insurer is: and that is NOT to "share risk" or "provide you with ideal service" ... but to make a profit, and as high a profit as feasible! And that is achieved by lessening the total amount they have to pay back in insurance claims.
So the body repair shop your representative recommends is "preferred" ... preferred by the insurer for THEIR benefit, not yours. And why is that? Because the recommended body shop is under agreement to make use of parts which are cheaper than the original auto parts that were in your car when it was new. But regrettably, most of these parts are substandard in quality and could even result in a dangerous repair job! It can even mean that your vehicle will be dangerous to drive after the fixes are completed.
There are even more reasons why selecting the wrong body shop can result in perilous repairs. There's a method referred to as "Clipping", and that means cutting off a complete half of your car (either the front or rear half) and affixing another (undamaged) half of a vehicle that has been wrecked.
The outcome means that the structural integrity of your vehicle's frame or unibody has been compromised. Does this sound hazardous to you? That's because it IS unsafe! But regrettably, it isn't unlawful! It's a widespread incident.
So the bottom line is - should you be involved in an auto accident - look out! Learn if the repair shop advised by your representative will be repairing your vehicle with aftermarket components. And if the shop practices "clipping" ... don't even consider using them!
