Whether you've heard of it or not, PLR (Private Label Rights) content makes it much easier for anyone to get content for their online business, whether for blogging, special reports, ebooks and even social media. Buying the rights to large chunks of content you don't have to write can turn into the ultimate short-cut for time-starved online business owners.

But, beware! PLR also represents a double-edged sword that can land you in some hot water with Google and article directories if you're not careful.

* Save Time / Avoid Effort *

It might seem obvious that you'll save a bunch of time when you don't have to create content yourself, but it goes way beyond that. Think about it. You don't have to do the research. You don't have to type it all up yourself. You don't have to wait for the bulk of the work to get done by you or someone else. So you save time and avoid effort on a couple of different levels.

Also, unlike resell rights where you can only resell the content without making any changes, with PLR you can change it around and re-purpose it any way you want or need without asking anybody's permission. This flexibility to make the content your own makes PLR particularly appealing.

Not only can you rewrite the content, you can also transform it into completely different mediums. You can record it as a podcast; make it into screen capture video; even turn it into a print book if you want.

* PLR Can Save You Money *

PLR definitely rates cheaper than hiring a ghost writer to create something specifically for you. And, if you need something customized, it's a lot cheaper to have something rewritten than to have it written in the first place.

For example, a ghost-written ebook would cost you $500 -1,000 minimum (bare minimum). But a PLR ebook on most topics doesn't cost more than $50 - 100. Also, a quick tour of Fiverr.com or other freelance-style sites will quickly show you services to re-write content cost about 70-80% LESS than ghost writing.

So you could hire someone to re-write a 10,000 word ebook for you for about $50 - $100 and do a good job. (HINT: $5-10 per thousand words is a good rule of thumb.)

Why so much less? Because re-writing content is a LOT easier for a writer or editor than writing the same content from scratch.

* The BIGGEST Mistake People Make With PLR Content *

Despite the obvious advantages, PLR is not without its pitfalls. If you use content everyone else can buy rights to without making any changes, you keep yourself from getting certain advantages with Google or article directories because of something called "duplicate content."

Duplicate content means just that, the same content as someone else who got there before you. Google doesn't rank duplicate content very highly and submitting content already in the article directories will usually get your account shut down.

The biggest mistake people make with PLR is not changing it at all and trying to use it "as is." The best thing you can do if you use PLR is to do one or more of the following with it.

First, re-write it or pay to have it re-written.

Second, target the content to a specific group of people (niche audience), like teachers or golfers or home builders. That specific angle will make it immensely more valuable and help separate you in both the reader's minds and the eyes of Google and the article directories.

Third, format the text so it looks neat, tidy, and professional. Appearance matters and most PLR content comes just as raw text.

PLR can be a great help in your business, especially if you're pressed for time or don't have the expertise in a particular subject area. Just make sure to add value to it and change it around before using it in your business or posting it to your website or blog.
