Located conveniently off the Mexican Highway 1, Guerrero Negro is a nature lovers dream. This quiet and unpretentious fishing village is located in the quiet lagoon of Laguna Ojo de Liebre.

Guerrero Negro is famous for its large salt factory that is located within the confines of the biosphere. Salt is gathered from the ocean to supply the needs of the nearby towns. The salt factory was opened in 1957 by the American, Daniel Ludwig, and is today one of the most productive salt mines in the world. However, for visitors, a trip to Guerrero Negro is less about the salt and more about the towns more famous inhabitants, the graceful and gigantic gray whales.

Nature lovers will revel in the stark contrasts between the Great Desert of El Vizcaino next to the lush and pristine beauty of the coastal lagoons. While the desert may seem lifeless, the lagoons certainly do not. Teeming with bird life year round, come December the towns famous visitors, the Great Gray Whales, come to birth their young. From December to about mid-March, the lagoon is teeming with gray whales and their calves, nursing, playing, and entertaining visitors with their playful nature and haunting songs.

Some of the year-round feathered inhabitants of the lagoon include white pelicans, red tailed falcons, white and red egrets, whimbrels and ospreys. While whale watching is limited to the December through March season, bird watching is available year round.

Other sites to see in the area include the rock paintings of the Sierra de San Francisco and Santa Marta, which have been a part of a World Heritage site since 1993. These mysterious prehistoric paintings occupy about 250 sites within the Sierra de San Francisco region of Baja, and date from between 1100 BC to about 1300 AD. According to legend, the paintings were created by a race of giants. Some of the figures represented are over 2 meters tall. The paintings are a bit difficult to access, due to their isolated location but are well worth the trek for those that do not fear the desert heat.

If you are planning an RV trip to Mexico, you can park your RV in the Malarrimo Trailer Park in Guerrero Negro. This is the town's premier full hook-up RV Park that features a restaurant, restrooms with hot water showers, and is very affordably priced. If you don't bring an RV, the park has tent sites available.

Guerrero Negro has many hotels and cabana's to accommodate tourists. There are also grocery stores and restaurants to serve visitors and locals alike. There are several craft markets as well if you need a little retail therapy.

One of the most attractive aspects of Guerrero Negro for some is the fact that it is not really a "tourist town". Though it does have its fair share of tourists, the town is still typically "Mexican". You will not find any chain bars or restaurants there, and people still speak more Spanish than English.

A road trip to Guerrero Negro is pretty simple. Its location is right off Mexican Highway 1, meaning you will have a straight shot from the border at San Diego. No immigration paperwork is needed to travel there, since it is located in the Free Zone of Mexico. You will need to have Mexican RV insurance or Mexican auto insurance, depending on your transportation of choice. Get your insurance online before you leave to avoid long waits at the border.

Guerrero Negro is one of those "off the beaten path" destinations that are sure to bring a smile to your face and memories that will last a lifetime. If you are planning on spending your winter down south, be sure and put a star next to Guerrero Negro, as it is one stop you won't want to miss.
