Each year thousands gather on the vast desert stretches between the tip of Baja California and the state of California in the U.S. to witness one of the most epic races of the year. The Baja 1000 is an off road race that loops from Ensenada, Mexico in the north and ends in La Paz at the southern tip of Baja. Some of the races are just one way while others are round trip, starting and ending in Ensenada. This year, from November 16th until November 20th, the drivers will compete in the 43rd annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, or what is known in racing circles as the Mother of all Desert Races.

The first official Baja 1000 race was held on October 31, 1967. It was named the NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally and took contestants from Tijuana to La Paz on a course that was 849 miles in length. This year the course is slightly longer, taking drivers over 1072.67 miles of grueling and rugged desert terrain. Races include contestants driving trophy trucks, dirt bikes, ATV's and specially designed off road cars. There are 33 Pro classes and 7 Sportsman classes for contestants to compete in. This is a truly international race since contestants from 15 different countries and over 35 different states in the U.S will be competing in the 43rd Annual Baja 1000.

Some of the famous racers scheduled to compete in this year's Baja include the legendary Rod Hall, who is the only racer to have raced in all previous 42 Baja 1000 races. He will be racing in the Trophy-Truck Division with the assistance of his sons Chad and Josh. Another Baja legend, Larry Roeseler, will also be competing in the Trophy-Truck Division with his brothers Tim and Ed Herbst. Roeseler is famous for winning the Baja 17 times, including 13 overall wins, 10 of those being on a motorcycle.

The race will begin on Wednesday November 17th with a slew of pre-race festivities in Bahía de Todos Santos in Ensenada. Watch the SCORE Manufacture's Midway, which will be held in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Boulevard Costero from 9AM until 5PM. Later that day, you can check out the driver/rider briefing in the Cathedral Room of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center at 7PM. From there, follow the racers down the desert track, meeting up with the competitors in La Paz where the race will finish. Downtown La Paz is the place to be on Saturday, November 20th for the post-race awards celebration.

If you want to witness this historic event you can easily do so by driving your own car or motorcycle down to Baja. You won't need to worry about vehicle permits since Baja California is part of the Mexican Free Zone. You do still need Mexican auto or motorcycle insurance, however. You can purchase a Mexican auto insurance policy, or motorcycle insurance policy, just for the week of the races. Be sure and bring your camera and get ready to witness the Mother of all Desert Races, the 43rd Annual Baja 1000.
